WATER VALLEY – Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported officer Aquarius Phillips will serve as a school resource officer (SRO) starting with the 2022-2023 school year. Phillips will be assigned to Davidson Elementary School.
Phillips will work alongside SRO Steve Story, who has worked in the school district for almost a decade. In previous years Story has worked at both Water Valley High School and Davidson Elementary School.
“We are going to have an officer at both schools every day. Steve was stretched covering the entire school district,” Mangrum noted about having two officers assigned to the district. “Both the school board and city board got behind this, supported it and encouraged it,” the chief added.
Mangrum also said Phillips is going to take an active role with maintaining school safety plans. Both officers are going to be involved in training throughout the year as schools across the nation place strong emphasis on security.
Both officers are paid by the school district for 10 months, and the city pays the officers for the two summer months when school is not in session.
