Another week has flown by at Water Valley High School (WVHS) and the nonstop roller coaster of events is only picking up. Sports are growing closer to playoffs, homecoming is approaching quickly, and homework is sneaking up on students without any warnings.
The Class of 2023 had their College Application Day on September 14. This day was a wonderful opportunity for seniors to get started on their futures. School Counselor, Mr. Jonathan Barnes, set up this day to engage students and get them excited for life after high school. Payday candy bars were even given to every senior to imply that they are only “one step closer to payday.”

Seniors at Water Valley High School applied to the colleges of their choice at the College Application Day held on September 14.
Seniors heard a presentation from Northwest Community College concerning scholarships, fees, housing and more. Then, seniors then broke into different rooms to apply to colleges of their choice with the help of WVHS teachers.
“College Application Day was an extremely helpful day for me because it allowed me to apply to Northwest Community College and Mississippi State University,” stated Abby Norwood, a senior at WVHS.
The University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Northwest Community College, Holmes Community College, Mississippi College, and Itawamba Community College were just a few of the colleges that received applications from WVHS seniors on this day!
This week the Student Council continue their push in the final stretch of the City of Stars Homecoming preparations. Field decorations and jobs were finalized along with the schedule and time of the homecoming pep rally. The club met after school on Monday and Friday to make all kinds of signs and decorations for homecoming week. Then, they met again on Saturday for an all-day workday as they hung decorations from the walls and ceilings to make WVHS a school of many cities. Homecoming week is shaping up to be one of the best yet thanks to the efforts of every member and sponsor of the Student Council.
Homecoming maids’ excitement grew this week as they prepared for their debut on the field this Friday! The girls got their dresses, filled out their information sheets, gathered homecoming day outfits, and picked a football player to escort them at the pep rally. These girls were voted on by students in their grades and will represent their classes as they walk down Bobby Clark Field for the homecoming presentation.
The Lady Devils Volleyball team took on Hickory Flat at home on September 13, suffering a loss. They rebounded on September 15 to beat Byhalia for a district win. The girls will be back in action at home against Pontotoc on September 22 with junior varsity starting at 5:30 and varsity at 6:30. Come support your Lady Devils as they get ready for the playoffs.
The Blue Devil football team took on Calhoun City on September 16 at home. Despite the 40 to 27 loss the Devils faced, students still supported their football team by dressing out in all white to white out the Wildcats.
The Devils will take on Calhoun City this Friday at home for their homecoming game beginning at 7:30. The Homecoming Court presentation will take place during halftime. Come and support your Blue Devil football team, cheer squad, band, color guard and homecoming maids on Friday!
This week proved to be hectic and a little stressful with all the upcoming events, but it was a good kind of stressful. It was the kind of stress that adds to the excitement and makes you giddy with what’s to come. Water Valley High School is really good at that kind of stress and somehow always leaves students anticipating what’s next.
