MANTACHIE – The Water Valley Blue Devils opened division play on the road with a big win over the undefeated Mantachie Mustangs, 42 – 27 (1-6). The Blue Devils improved to 3 -3 (1-0) on the season with the victory that quieted a large home team crowd.
The teams traded scores for much of the first half starting with the Blue Devils’ first possession. They marched 59 yards to the endzone in an eight-play drive capped off by a quarterback keeper as C.J. Telford took it in on a seven yard run. The Blue Devil defense took the field and forced a three and out after Jaden Morgan got into the backfield to deliver a tackle for a loss.
The Mustangs were forced to punt and Water Valley took over on their own 25 yard-line, but a pass from Telford to Sasa Freeman was picked off in a turnover that led to points for the home team. The Mustangs scored on a long drive that included going for it on fourth and short two times before finding the endzone to tie the game in the waning seconds of the opening quarter.
The Blue Devils wasted little time scoring on their next possession with a four-play drive culminating with Que Carothers cutting around defenders on a 48-yard run to the endzone, giving his team a 14 – 7 lead.
The Mustangs punched back, scoring on the ensuing possession with a 64-yard drive to knot the score at 14 midway through the second quarter.
Water Valley wasted little time regaining the lead as Elijah White scooped up the kickoff and ran 75 yards for a touchdown in the exciting back-and-forth action that put Blue Devils up again by a touchdown – 21 – 14.
White would also make the next big play on the following Mantachie drive with an interception deep in their territory that he returned to mid-field.
The turnover set up a scoring drive as Telford connected with Carothers on a 15-yard reception for the final touchdown of the half and the Blue Devils entered the locker room leading 27 – 14 after a missed PAT.
The Mustangs opened second half play with a 59-yard scoring drive that clicked off almost five minutes in the third quarter to cut to Blue Devils’ lead to six – 27 – 21. Their second half momentum continued as a deep shot from Telford was picked off.
The Mustangs drove deep into Blue Devil territory before Carothers came out of a pile with a fumble recovery that he ran for 90 yards and a touchdown to deliver the fatal blow in the game to go ahead 35 – 21.
Both teams would score a final touchdown before the final buzzer – Water Valley scoring on a two yard run by Morgan with just over three minutes left and Mantachie scored as the clock hit zero.
The Blue Devils will be back in action Friday against Kossuth at home. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
