Megan Patton displays the ornament she made to display at the Governor’s mansion as part of the “Mississippi Hometown Christmas.
WATER VALLEY – The city will be represented with an ornament created by local textile artist Megan Patton at the “Mississippi Hometown Christmas” planned by Governor Tate Reeves and First Lady Elee Reeves as part of “Christmas at the Mansion.”
The ornament was commissioned by the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and features the stylized blue and white Water Valley school logo on one side and a watermelon design on the other.
“I’m a quilter and for the past few years I have been making miniature Christmas quilt ornaments. I immediately knew I wanted to do that because I love miniatures.” While looking at snow-globe ornaments, Patton realized it was the style she wanted for finished design. Now, all she had to do was find what she felt best represented the town in keeping with the request from the Governor and First Lady for the ornaments.
“Mississippi is rich in culture and history – from beautiful art and moving literature to incredible music and delicious food,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “This theme will pay tribute to the many unique communities across our state along with all the people and places that make Mississippi great. Since Mississippi’s founding, our Southern hospitality has continued to offer our visitors a memorable experience and there’s no better time to showcase what makes our state so special than during the Christmas season.”
“‘Christmas at the Mansion’ is an incredibly special time for our family and Mississippians. Our hope is that this year’s theme and decorations will showcase the Mississippi that we all love,” said First Lady Elee Reeves. “I’m excited to see this theme come to life and every region of our state represented during the holiday season.”
The Water Valley ornament represents our city well. “You can’t drive down Main Street without seeing blue and white or watermelons,” Patton said. “So, when I think of Water Valley I think of the school colors and I think of Watermelon Carnival.”
“We appreciate that Megan created an ornament to represent Water Valley that showcases two things that we believe illustrates the best of our city,” said Rhonda Burchett, president of the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are so proud of our young people and our wonderful school system. The Watermelon Carnival is one of the largest tourism events in Mississippi and a great chance for homecoming. It’s another perfect representation of Water Valley.”
According to Ann Beard, Chief of Staff at the Office of the First Lady, the pubic is invited to a Candlelight Tour on Friday, December 2 from 4pm until 8 pm. Hot cocoa and cookies will be served and Santa will be visiting the mansion with special treats for the children.
