WINONA – After striking first in their opening possession, the Blue Devils struggled to contain one of the top 3A teams in the state, ending the season with a 48 -14 defeat in the second round of the playoff against the Winona Tigers.
The Blue Devils (6-5) drove 65 yards after receiving the opening kicking on a six play as quarterback C.J. Telford went to the air. Telford connected with Que Carothers on the first play, a nine-yard pass. Telford found Sasa Freeman for a 39-yard pass and again in the endzone for the points.
Struggling the get their ground game going, the Blue Devils were not able to muster substantial yards on their next two drives. Forced to punt both times, the Tigers’ offense capitalized one back-to-back scores to go ahead 21 – 7 early in the second quarter. Both scores came with quarterback keepers by Winona quarterback Chase Richardson.
Looking to regain momentum, Telford went back to the air and connected with Eli White to move the chains. Carothers fought for another eight yards on the ground, followed by a run from Telford. The drive stalled on fourth and long, and the Tigers sacked Telford for the turnover.
It was all Richardson on the next drive as the Tiger quarterback churned out yards on play after play to put his team in scoring position for their next touchdown to increase the lead to 28 – 7.
The half ended with three turnovers in the final minute, a fumble by Telford followed by an interception by Eli White that ended with another fumble to give the Tigers the ball as the final seconds clicked off the clock.
The Tigers got the ball at the start of the third quarter and notched three unanswered touchdowns in the half to go up 48 – 7 and start a running clock in the game. The Blue Devils picked up their final touchdown of the season with a goal-line run to end the game, 48 – 14. The game marked the last for 15 seniors and a hard-fighting team who earned every point scored during the season.
The Tigers will face Amory in the third round of the playoffs Friday night.
