WATER VALLEY – Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported the Thanksgiving holiday was mostly incident-free in the city with a pair of fender benders on Friday topping his weekly report. One of the wrecks was in the parking lot of the Shell station on Frostland Drive and the second in Rolling Hills.
“The Rolling Hills wreck turned into a disturbance, almost an altercation,” Mangrum reported. Yalobusha County deputies assisted city officers in dispelling the disturbance spawned by an argument with bystanders and a vehicle occupant.
“We made it through Thanksgiving without any big problems, which is unusual,” the chief added.
On Monday officers received a 911 call about a person laying on the ground in the parking lot at Solero Technologies at 12:38 p.m. Mangrum reported an employee at the company was on lunch break and took his own life.
“We were able to determine there was no foul play, the gun shot was self-inflicted,” the chief said. He said there were no direct witnesses. “But there were people in the parking lot that witnessed enough to know the victim was alone,” Mangrum added.
The chief praised the cooperation from management at Solero.
“They worked with us to help preserve the scene and to protect the scene from bystanders. Company officials were very helpful,” he explained.
Mangrum said the plant continued operation after determination that there was no threat to the plant or plant employees.
“This is heart-breaking, in a small town there are typically strong connections with families and victims in an incident like this. Our prayers go out to the family and co-workers,” Mangrum said.
