As it turns out, the groundhog – Punxsutawney Phil – saw his shadow on February 2nd, predicting six more weeks of winter. Personally, I am not the biggest fan of winter, so I am hoping that Phil is extremely incorrect. However, in relation to school I am really hoping Phil is incorrect because I do not think I can handle spending another six weeks being cold during fourth period in the annual room because the heat in that room does not work. But it is kind of fun for the annual staff to huddle around the space heater and share blankets. I feel like those days, although cold, are always filled with laughter and fun.
Remaining on the topic of weather, the Wednesday weather delay was nice for students who received a two hour late start at WVHS. Students slept in a little longer and got to miss their first and second period classes. It was a nice, little break in the middle of the week for students and teachers and more importantly ruled out the risk of accidents due to inclement weather.
Water Valley High School created a Video Gaming Club last year where students who love gaming can come and share their tips, tricks, and fun together. Last year, Colby Maynor was very dedicated to the idea that WVHS needed a video game club. So, he took charge and brought the idea to life. Mrs. Rotkiewicz stepped up as teacher sponsor and sent out an interest survey to get students interested in the club. Soon after, members began joining and the club held its first meeting.
“Colby is the real reason for this club. He had the idea, he recruited members, and he put in the work,” Mrs. Rotkiewicz explained.
The Video Gaming Club meets every two to three weeks after school in either the library or Coach Wolfe’s room. Members of the club take turns bringing a gaming system and a game to play at each meeting. This year the club incorporated a variety of games along with the existing video games. The club welcomed card and board games into the mix to reach a range of all types of game enthusiasts. The Video Gaming Club is a wonderful edition to the lists of clubs at WVHS.
The Student Council is continuing to sell tickets for the Valentine’s Day Dance. Members have set up before school twice this past week in order to give students time to purchase their tickets. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from Mrs. Carwile, Mrs. Hodge, any student council member, or through Cash App(@WVValDayDance). If you purchase a ticket through Cash App, please put the student’s name in the notes section of the payment. The dance will take place at Fountain Square Event Plaza from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on February 14 for all seventh through 10th grade students. The Valentine’s Day Dance will include a DJ, photo spots, pizza, and drinks and will overall be full of fun and dancing. The Water Valley Main Street Association is sponsoring the event with the help of the Student Council.
February is in full swing at WVHS and students are inviting the month in with open arms. With these new weeks comes many new challenges and events. However, I cannot wait to see what all this month holds for Water Valley High School.
