Water Valley police officer Jakirio Horton investigates a crash on Wise Street Thursday afternoon in the rain. Horton arrested the driver for DUI after an investigation.
WATER VALLEY – Alcohol-related arrests account for much of the activity on the Water Valley Police Department’s report for late January and early February. Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported two arrests for DUIs and another for public drunk.
Anthony Beshires, 67, of Water Valley was arrested for DUI on Feb. 2 after officers responded to a vehicle wreck at the intersection of Wise and Suggs streets. Beshires was behind the wheel when his Mazda truck left the road and careened down a hill, striking a Magnolia tree.
Mangrum reported officers detected the odor of an intoxicating beverage and launched a DUI investigation. Beshires’ blood-alcohol-level was almost twice the legal limit to drive. He was arrested and transported to the Yalobusha County Detention Center (YCDC).
The second DUI arrest came a day earlier, on Feb. 1, after Shawn Walker was stopped for running a stop sign at Wagner and Main and a traffic light at Main and Panola. Officers detected the odor of an intoxicating beverage and marijuana and started an investigation. Walker, 46, of Water Valley was arrested for DUI – second offense.
Walker plead guilty in municipal court on Feb. 2 and was sentenced.
Skyzic Haire was arrested on Jan. 31 for public drunk. The chief reported Haire was causing a scene at Rolling Hills and refused the leave after repeated requests from officers to resolve the situation without taking Haire to jail.
Other activity reported by the chief includes:
• David Trace Schmitz, 39, of Water Valley was arrested for disturbing the peace on Jan. 28. Officers responded to a call of a suspicious male in Oak Hill Cemetery and observed Schmitz acting erratically, shouting, screaming profanities. He was transported to YCDC and later bonded out.
• Karl Walls, 62, was arrested for an open warrant issued after an alleged hit and run and leaving the scene of an accident in Water Valley last month. The arrest was made on Feb. 3 following a traffic stop on Stephens Street.
• Austin Wayne Savage was arrested on Feb. 3 on an outstanding warrant for felony domestic violence from an incident that occurred in the city back in November. Savage currently of Lafayette County, is a former Water Valley resident. Savage bonded out and the case will be presented to a grand jury.
• Kenneth Mayes, 39, of Water Valley was arrested for disorderly conduct and simple assault. Mays also had an outstanding arrest warrant for disturbing the peace. The arrest was made on Feb. 5 after officers responded to a disturbance on Stephens Street.
The chief reported that Mays was threatening the victim, and refused to calm down or to comply with the officers’ orders.
“He continued to threaten the victim in front of the officers,” Mangrum added.
Mayes was booked in YCDC and bonded out.
The Water Valley fire department and police department were dispatched to a grass fire on Central Street Monday afternoon after a report that an intoxicated man set his yard on fire. Firefighters Will Carter and Cody Mustard quickly extinguished the blaze as Skyzic Haire (left) watches the action and takes a swig.
