Exhibit Featuring Paintings By Maxwell Opens Saturday At The Gallery In The Green Room
An opening for an exhibit of paintings by artist Michael Maxwell is scheduled in the Gallery in the Green Room on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Maxwell was born in Mobile, Ala. also spent childhood years in Jacksonville, Fla. and Atlanta, Ga. He has lived in Mississippi since he was 11 years old. He earned a BFA from Delta State University in 1998, majoring in painting with a minor in printmaking.
He painted extensively in north Mississippi for many years, backpacking into remote areas and painting landscapes from direct observation. He still prefers to work this wait (painting directly), although now most of the subjects of his paintings are accessible by automobile.
“Because my family moved around a lot, my painting subjects tend to be about me getting a sense of how a place feels. Currently I’m interested in urban landscape and, increasingly, interiors,” Maxwell said. “I find it interesting how the painter is a sort of ‘filter’ or interpreter translating the world onto canvas. I’m always trying to find the right balance between literal versus poetic expressions. To me, that is where the elusive magic in painting lies.”
The exhibit will run through Nov. 25. Viewings are available by appointment, call (318) 655-2623. The gallery is located at 200 Panola Street in Water Valley.
