WATER VALLEY – Aargh! A band of scurvy pirates took over Blackmur Memorial Library during the Summer Library Program. They scoured the library for hidden treasure, leaving the library with their pirate swag and a treasure chest to boot!

Breaking the pirate code to find treasure hidden in the library are, from left, Zola Crow, Addison Morris, Charlotte Vance and Lottie Crow. Once all the locations were deciphered and the treasure found, each kid officially became a pirate and received their pirate hat and eye patch.
As part of the Adventure Begins at the Library program, kids hit the high seas Wednesday, June 12, learning about pirates, breaking secret pirate codes to find hidden treasure and then making their very own mini pirate chest. After breaking a coded message that told the locations of doubloons hidden around the library, the pirates traded the coins for the chance to dig through a treasure chest for their reward. They then painted and decorated their very own treasure chests to take on their own pirate adventures.
After the program, members of the library staff and Friends of Blackmur Library had a sing-a-long and story time for the younger kids. The theme continued with a pirate song sing-a-long followed by the stories Big Truck, Little Island by Chris Van Dusen and Little Whale by Jo Weaver.
There are two more session of the Summer Library Program – Wednesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 26. The theme for June 19 is Superheroes. There will be a series of “trials” in which the kids will get a chance to show off their own super abilities and we’ll learn about making your own comic book. We’ll try to protect any secret identities, but if any hero feels the urge to come in their costume, they are more than welcome.
On June 26 we’ll take off into outer space with “out of this world” activities and crafts. In addition, the library has arranged for a tour of the Space Walk – a scale model of the solar system that starts in the City Park. After the program from 2-3 p.m., parents or guardians can take their kids to the park and meet some of the folks who created the Space Walk who will tell them all about it.
Story time for the younger children will take place each Wednesday as well, starting at 3 p.m.
The 2-3 p.m. sessions of the Summer Library Program are for kids in 1st through 6th grade. Registration is required for these sessions. Parents and guardians can come by the library and register Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Pre-registration is preferred, but you can register on the day of the event. No registration is required for the sing-a-long and story time.
