The Davidson High School choir sang carols on the downtown bandstand following the 1953 Water Valley Christmas parade.
10 Years – December 24, 2015 – Friday was a landmark day for Water Valley’s Main Street as Mechanic Bank’s mammoth renovation was celebrated with a ribbon cutting. Many of the bank’s employees including Bank President/CEO Cam Tyler and bank board president Bill Larson joined the Water Valley Ambassadors and Mayor Larry Hart in celebrating the grand reopening of the bank following the year long project.
School board trustee Cayce Washington announced his resignation at the final board meeting of the year. Washington is stepping down to assume duties as District 1 Supervisor. School board members are expected to make an appointment to fill his vacancy.
The Board of Supervisors final meeting of 2015 marked the final meeting for outgoing supervisors Tommy Vaughn, Frank “Bubba” Tillman, George Suggs and Amos Sims.
Don Larson announced the Larson’s Piggly Wiggly Good Citizenship Scholarship will be awarded annually.
20 Years—December 22, 2005 – Chris Wilkinson, assistant vice-president of Renasant Bank in Water Valley, took first place in the Mississippi Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet.
Mayor Bill Norris addressed City of Water Valley employees during the year-end Christmas Party. The meal was catered by Larson’s Piggly Wiggly.
Ashley Haas, daughter of Rev. and Mr. Michel Haas of Water Valley, was a client of John Robert Powers Modeling Agency.
Ole Miss winter graduates included Christopher Demond Yancy, Jennifer Lynn Norris McMinn, Robert Bishop, Timothy Chad Ferguson, and Vietta Vantrice McLeod, all of Water Valley.
Josh Johnson, 14, killed a nice 7-point buck, hunting on his grandfather’s place at Pleasant Grove.
Deaths reported were Martha Vaughn Bankston, Justin Marie Groner, Sandi Simmons Little, May Ophelia Nicholas Madden, Carla Elizabeth Pauly and Toy J. Sutherland.
30 Years—December 21, 1995 – Christmas Lighting winners were: Business Division, Theme, People’s Bank; Originality, Yalobusha General Hospital and Nursing Home; Residential, Theme, Dr. and Mrs. Joe Walker; Originality, Dr. and Mrs. Barry Weeks.
Pictured was Melvin Ford accepting a check from Harry Sunderland, president of Peoples Bank, honoring him on his retirement. Melvin’s wife, Cecil, looked on.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Blackwood’s yard was selected as “Yard of the month” for December by The Garden Club of Water Valley. Town and Country Garden Club choose the home of Jean and Sonny Lollar as “Country Yard of the Month.”
County Agent Steve Cummings wished a “Merry Christmas” to all Yalobushians in his Cummings and Goings in Agriculture Column.
Presenting Lion Stanley Crow a $100 donation for the Lions Club’s Christmas Fund were Anchor Club members, Leaf Tierce, Sonya Brown, Stacy Howell, and Misty King.
40 Years—December 26, 1985 – Lynn Finch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Finch, visited with Santa at The Mechanics Savings Bank’s Open House.
Members of the Water Valley Police Department, pictured in their Christmas greeting, were: Chief J. D. Watson; Jimmy Dollahite, Johnny Easley, Charles Truly, Lorraine Turner, Calvin Sellers, and Roger Thomas.
“Christmas in Disneyland” was the theme of the 1985 Christmas parade. Holley Automotive’s entry was the Disneyland Express, with Personnel Manager Everett Taylor as engineer. Others on the float were: Jo Smith, Donald Duck; Sheila Barley, Minnie Mouse; and Tommy Latham as Goofy.
50 Years—December 25, 1975 – Letters to Santa Claus were from Chris Sutherland, Andrea Davis, Holly Guarr, and Jammy Berry.
Preparing for service were Bobby Clark, Yalobusha County Chancery Clerk elect, and Norman Newman, deputy Chancery Clerk, who attended the Chancery Clerk Orientation Seminar in Jackson.
Yalobushians Mrs. J. G. Brower, State Chairman of the Nominating Committee, and Mrs. Robert D. Pittman, incoming Director of the Northwest District, attended the Northwest District Extension Homemakers Club Workshop, held in Greenville.
WVHS Band Majorettes, Suzanne Davis, Lori Hardy, Cheryl Odom, and Tracy Williamson, performed as the Bruce and Water Valley Bands played following the Water Valley Christmas Parade.
Yalobusha native, Joe W. (Bud) Goforth, Extension 4-H Agent in Calhoun County, was honored for 10 years of service to Calhoun County. The award was presented at the Extension Conference held in Biloxi.
60 Years—December 23, 1955 – Students will be honored Sunday at First Methodist Church. Bill Gafford, Ole Miss student, and Jeannie Barron, a student at M.S.C.W., will give brief talks. Rev. Walter Smith is pastor of the church.
Several from Yalobusha County completed a Civil Defense Course. They were Doke French, Mae Mathis, Julian Boxx, John Cox, Tomie Ashford, Watson Hunt, Dan Murrell and Clovis Steele.
Mrs. Carey Holloway was hostess for the annual First Methodist Wesleyan Guild’s Christmas Party.
Mrs. Herman White hosted The Garden Club of WV’s Christmas meeting.
70 Years—December 22, 1955 – The WVHS Lady Blue Devils earned runner- up honors at the Coffeeville Invitational Tournament, falling to Coffeeville for the third straight time this season. The Blue Devils defeated Jeff Davis in the opener, but dropped the semi-final game to Duck Hill.
Judging the Oxford Lighting Contest were Mrs. F. H. Poteete, Mrs. Frank Hyde, and Mrs. J. G. Carpenter, members of The Garden Club of Water Valley.
80 Years—December 20, 1945 – First Methodist Church will have a White Christmas Pageant Sunday morning. An annual affair, the program this year is titled, “White Gifts for the King,” and is directed by Mrs. Carr Johnsey.
A Christmas pageant, “Bethlehem” will be presented at North Main Methodist. Mass will be solemnized in the Catholic Church on Christmas Eve.
In Station JDHS (Jeff Davis School news) students wrote letters to Santa. Their P.S. was: Please Santa, don’t forget our superintendent, Mr. Denley, who is now in Japan.
