WATER VALLEY – Other than a report of a squatter at a Fly Street residence, the Clay Street burglary reported Sunday is the first in several months in the city limits according to Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum. However the chief urges residents to take extra precautions during the holiday seasons when residential burglaries often increase. Mangrum shared the following tips to help deter home break-ins:
1. Never announce holiday travel plans on any social media platforms– even if it’s to friends, family and colleagues.
2. Make sure holiday gifts, expensive electronics and other valuables are not visible from outside your windows.
3. Lock all doors and windows before you leave your home, either for a short trip to the grocery store or for an extended period.
4. If possible, install a monitored alarm system in your home with visible signs.
5. Make sure your home insurance is up to date and provides adequate coverage if you own luxury goods, jewelry and electronics. Check to see if you need an additional rider or floater insurance policy from your local insurance provider.
6. Video cameras, driveway motion detectors and smart home doorbells can also be theft deterrents.
7. Keep the exterior of your home and yard well-lit with low-wattage outdoor lighting.
8. Trim bushes near windows and keep the lawn cut to maintain the appearance of being home.
