Police Make DUI, Felony Arrests

WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Police Department conducted a traffic patrol saturation from Friday, Nov. 5, through Sunday, Nov. 7, that resulted in 42 traffic citations, two DUI arrests and one felony arrest.
Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported the city-wide detail was conducted to help curtail driving infractions and combat drunk driving.
“It is important for the public to be aware that our officers are out here working to protect the citizens in our city,” Mangrum told the Herald.
The DUI arrests included Carrie Holland, age 63, of Water Valley who was arrested on Nov. 5 on South Main Street after she was stopped for careless driving. She was charged with DUI – other substance. Bennie Christian, III, age 52, of Marks was stopped for careless driving on Frostland Drive on Nov. 6. The stop led to his arrest for DUI, second offense.
The felony arrest also came during a traffic stop for careless driving. Joe Conard, age 58, of Water Valley was stopped on Calhoun Street and charged with possession of a controlled substance (ecstasy). He was also charged with possession of a weapon by a felon after a Bowie knife was discovered in the vehicle. Conard appeared by Judge Trent Howell in municipal court and was given a $20,000 bond.
Other activity reported by the chief included two arrests for simple assault on Monday. David Schmitz, age 37, and Kris Crow, age 27, both of Water Valley were charged after officers were called to a fight in progress on Greer Drive. According to the incident report, Schmitz threatened to “gut” Crow. Crow doused Schmitz with whiskey and threatened to “beat his ass.” The subjects continued to attempt to fight when the officers arrived on the scene.
