If you want to make a high school buzz all afternoon long, bring in a Chick-fil-A food truck. Almost every conversation I had after lunch last Tuesday included the words eight count chicken nuggets and sweet tea. Students walking down the hallway were discussing what time they were going and how this truck needs to come to town more often. I think it is safe to say that almost every Water Valley student was down ten dollars by Tuesday night. Students love Chick-fil-A almost as much as we love Mrs. Missy’s green beans in the cafeteria on Thursdays.
In attendance news, there is a new incentive for the month of November. Students who receive zero absences, zero tardies and zero office referrals for the month of November can participate in the WVHS student and teacher talent show. The talent show is always a fun event for students and teachers to show off their unique talents and gifts for the rest of the student body. The talent show will be held at the end of November.
The Student Council held their trivia night at Buffalo Wild Wings on November 8. Teams discussed Mickey Mouse’s full name, the three longest rivers, if Willie Nelson is still living and how many wives King Henry VIII had. The night was filled with wings, laughter, and an ultimate prize of $500 dollars. The winning team consisted of Maggie Ward, Vaughn Daniels, Colton Horner, Sarah Ward and Jackson Ward.
The football team ended their season on November 5 against Aberdeen in the first round of playoffs The team continuously fought all season and played with all they had each game. The amount of practice and hard work the team put in was evident throughout the season. The Blue Devils are saying goodbye to a group of senior athlete leaders on the field. These boys have set the standards high and are leaving with great hopes for their underclassman.
Jon Surrette, a senior and kicker for the Blue Devil football team states, “If I had to say why I’m thankful for this past season, it would have to be because of the way it taught me how to deal with adversity. From dealing with Covid at the beginning of the season and injuries within the team, you had to learn how to push through and treat every game like it was your last. Coming off from tough losses was hard, but it created the urge to improve and get better for the next week and that ultimately carries on to the next chapter of life as well. You know
everything is not always gonna be perfect and things are going to go wrong but that has taught me to stand tall, push through, and learn from those circumstances. Being a Blue Devil is an honor, and it truly means the world to me. Growing up my whole life here, being a Blue Devil was always something I looked up to. So, having the opportunity to be a part of such a great community and team means everything to me. You can’t beat the feeling of seeing packed stands at any sporting event you go to in Water Valley. It’s truly remarkable. This community is supportive through thick and thin and is like nothing else. Being able to go through my high school career and grow closer to the people here is something I would never trade. It was an honor to be a part of such a great team throughout the years. Being a Blue Devil is something I’ll cherish forever and as always Go Big Blue!”
The boys and girls basketball teams have been busy in their season. The Lady Devils captured a win against Winona on November 9 while the boys fell short. On November 11, the senior athletes participated in “My Jersey, Your Impact.” The seniors picked a teacher and gave that teacher their jersey to wear for the day before their game against Bruce that night. With the player’s jersey, the athlete also wrote a note to their chosen teacher describing the impact that teacher has had on them throughout their high school career. That night the Lady Devils and Blue Devils both defeated Bruce. The Basketball team’s next game will be November 19 at home against Coldwater starting at 5pm. At this game, local churches will be recognized as the Blue Devils host “Faith Night.”
Students are extremely excited for a full week off for Thanksgiving! Filling up on turkey, spending time with family and friends, and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade are only a few of the events students have been anticipating, but mainly a break away from school is what is most anticipated by students and teachers. I know that is what I am most looking forward to. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and eat lots of mashed potatoes, which by the way is definitely the best side dish!
