Students were extremely thankful for Thanksgiving break and are now flying into Christmas. These next three weeks will be filled with Christmas decorations, dress up days, activities and the dreaded studying for exams. Students get out for holiday break on December 21 with that day being a 60 percent day.
In between the wait for Christmas, the Student Council has created many fun dress up days and events for students. Starting on December 1, Water Valley students are “Beginning to look a lot like Christmas” and wearing their Christmas sweaters and socks. On December 2, every student will be given a paper ornament to decorate and hang on the trees located around the hallways. On December 3, Students will deck out in their Santa hats. The next week will consist of a “Blue Christmas” where students can bundle up in their chilly blue attire (December 6), represent their favorite reindeer by wearing reindeer antlers (December 7), and reveal their inner Grinch by repping green or a wild whoville hairstyle (December 8).
The Student Council is also doing a fundraiser for the Junior Auxiliary this Christmas. Students can purchase paper wreaths to hang on their favorite teacher’s doors and the teacher with the most wreaths before Christmas break will receive a handmade throw knitted by Mrs. Smith. Students will also be allowed to participate in a special game of bingo. This game is a crowd favorite for both the faculty and student body. Each bingo square will have a description and students have to get a teacher to meet the description and sign that specific square. Students frantically race around the school during break and class changes to completely fill their board up first in order to win a prize.
The Student Council met Monday, November 29, after school to deck the halls in preparation for the busy season. Club members and officers cut out the paper wreaths, decorated bulletin boards, and hung tinsel and lights from the ceiling to make Water Valley High School a holly and jolly destination this winter.
In other club news, the Valley Views Annual staff is driving into high gear as they work on completing fall sports and events pages. The Annual members are constantly taking pictures of all events and sports including field trips, random student and teacher snaps, dress up days and more to use in the yearbook. Seniors have just submitted their senior quotes and students are documented all over the pages of snaps, sports and more. The Annual staff works extremely hard everyday to create a memorable and fun book of memories and laughs for all students to enjoy and look back on. Yearbooks are on sale now for $55 and can be bought from Mrs. Koshenina at any time.
In Blue Devil basketball news, both the boys and girls team’s play at Lafayette on December 2 starting at 5 p.m. The team also plays at home on December 3 against J.Z. George at 6 p.m. At this game the Devils will recognize past alumni as part of their “Alumni Night” in order to thank them for the constant encouragement and support the alumni give to the current Blue Devil basketball program.
It was extremely nice to have a week long break but now we are back into the high energy rush of events and I, along with the rest of the student body, could not be more excited; except for the exams, those I am definitely not excited for. However, this is a fun time full of Christmas music, hot chocolate, and the occasional begging of a teacher for a Christmas party where we watch Rudolph all class period. The hallways are bursting with conversations about wishlists, vacation plans, family gatherings, and eating way too many Christmas cookies.
This is definitely a stressful but highly enjoyable three weeks at WVHS and I’m thankful I get to document and share a piece of it with you.
