Drugs, guns and paraphernalia were seized after an Oakland man was arrested at a convenience store. Deputies stopped to check on the man after spotting him sleeping in his vehicle parked in front of a gas pump. The crack cocaine weighed almost a quarter of an ounce.
OAKLAND – An Oakland man who dozed off while parked at the gas pumps at the Oakland Shell Station was arrested on multiple felony drug charges after deputies patrolling the area stopped to check on him. Sheriff Jerimaine Gooch reported Zaire Jones, 28, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent and possession of marijuana on June 8.
“Deputies knocked on the window to make sure everything was okay,” Gooch explained. “When he opened the door they immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana.”
Deputies seized approximately a quarter-ounce of alleged crack cocaine, several dosage units of adderall, marijuana, plastic baggies, a scale and two assault-style guns with high capacity magazines.
The sheriff said Zaire claimed he had ordered a pizza and was waiting on it when he fell asleep.
Zaire was booked in the Yalobusha County Detention Center and later posted bond.
Other arrests reported by the sheriff included:
• Devanta Quincy Brooks, 26, of Coffeeville was arrested during the execution of a search warrant on June 9 at 185 Wortham Street. Gooch reported the search warrant was obtained after multiple drug purchases had been made using a confidential informant in addition to an arrest warrant for the sell of methamphetamine obtained by agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
Brooks was taken into custody as he arrived at the residence just before the search warrant was executed. Authorities seized alleged methamphetamine and a small amount of alleged fentanyl from the residence..
“This arrest was the result of several months of undercover work after receiving reports of possible illegal activity involving this individual,” Gooch said.
• Ramiro Avalos was arrested for aggravated domestic violence on June 10. The arrest was made on County Road 179 in the vicinity of Cossar State Park.
• Bernard White was arrested on Edgefield Street in Water Valley for possession of drug paraphernalia on June 10.
• Jaccderious Pritchard was arrested for domestic violence on June 7. The arrest was made during a traffic stop on Hwy. 7.
“The charges were obtained by another agency and we were able to take him into custody,” Gooch reported.
• Corey Arbuckle of Coffeeville was arrested on June 6 for DUI following a traffic stop on Hwy. 7.
• Stephen Hand was arrested on June 5 for domestic violence on June 5. The arrest was made on County Road 9 in the vicinity of Tillatoba.
• Carol Bailey was arrested on June 7 for making repeated 911 call reporting false information. The arrest was made at the Wallace Creek Campground after she reported someone was outside her camper trying to kill her.
Deputies responded in nine minutes after the first call at 10:29 p.m. on June 6 and discovered there was no threat. They responded to a second call less than an hour later, as well as three additional calls during the early morning hours on June 7.
“The deputies were tied up for several hours and repeatedly warned her not to call 911 and report false information. Sadly we had to arrest her to stop the 911 calls, and this wasn’t the first time to arrest her for the same charge,” Gooch added.
