COFFEEVILLE – A Coffeeville man was airlifted to Regional One Health in Memphis in critical condition following a shooting early Saturday morning at a residence on Northwest Street in Coffeeville. Sheriff Jerimaine Gooch reported that deputies were dispatched to the scene at 12:48 a.m. after shots were fired during an altercation that escalated into gunplay between two males.
“Both parties were injured, one was hit in the chest area and in the back of the head, and the other party was grazed,” Gooch told the Herald.
Charges have not been filed and the sheriff reported the case will be presented to a grand jury.
“There was full cooperation in this investigation by others attending this gathering and it appears that the shooter who received minor injuries acted in self defense. We have gathered evidence including statements from witnesses and will present it to a grand jury for a final determination,” Gooch said.
The sheriff reported that Coffeeville Fire Department responded to assist with a landing zone for the helicopter. Yalobusha EMS also responded to provide medical treatment.
