I’m calling it. It’s Fall. I know that Fall doesn’t officially start for a couple more weeks but I’m not waiting any longer. This horrendous extended summer has stretched my seasonal limits and I’m at the end of my dog days rope. I take the cooler mornings we’ve been having here in the past few days as permission to move on. I will now make soup, put on a hoodie, hold a cup of hot chocolate with both hands while standing at the backdoor looking out over the yard and imagine I’m seeing a yellow tint to the tree leaves.
I’d like to congratulate all the Water Valley walkers, joggers and runners (both morning and afternoon shifts) for making it through this summer out there at Crawford Sports Complex. I’ve walked and run all around this little town for 19 summers so far and this past one was just about the worst. I’m part of the morning walking shift so I give a collective high-five to everyone on that hodge-podge crew — Fun Convertible Lady, Nice Guy with a Stick, Other Nice Guy with a Stick, Runner Girl, Sweet Grandpaw, Big Hat Lady, Clearly CrossFit Woman, Beagle Lady, The Couple, etc. — as we all walk our owns paths into the cooler mornings. All that walking in the spiteful summer means we can raid the Halloween candy and have an extra couple of Sister Shubert rolls at Thanksgiving. The rolls alone are worth it.
Speaking of indulgences, I hear that the Magnolia Coffee Co. has started serving wine by the glass on Thursday and Friday nights! I think this is an excellent development and I encourage everyone to support a Water Valley business trying new things. And this new thing is something that a lot of people in Water Valley want! I haven’t had the chance to get anything at Magnolia Coffee outside of my mid-afternoon cold brews but several of my friends have gone for the wine happy hour. They enjoyed it and I certainly plan to go.
Ultimately, this town needs a bar. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Just a small, simple bar! That’s it. That’s all we need! Well …. and a splash pad. We need a splash pad and a bar. They probably need to be separate entities but I’m open to the possibility of a splash pad and bar combo situation. I don’t want to rule anything out.
In other Main Street news, I passed my fire inspection. This is a minor miracle for me simply because my Main Street studio is filled with tons and tons of fabrics. The Water Valley fire department has been trying to get some of these old buildings up to code and I, for one, am very thankful. Historically, it seems that half the buildings in town have burned down at some point. You’d think a town called Water Valley wouldn’t have had so many fires but you’d be wrong. Our propensity for fires is yet another reason to have a splash pad nearby.
Lastly in Fall news, y’all go ahead and mark October 14 down on your calendars for the annual Water Valley Art Crawl! See ya there!
