WATER VALLEY – A two-trip night to a Greer Street residence led to two arrests in unrelated incidents on Oct. 6. Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported officers first arrested Samuel Campbell for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage at 2:28 a.m.
The chief reported that officers were patrolling near Wise Street when they observed a damaged stop sign. After checking they determined that the sign had been struck by a vehicle.
“Officers were able to follow the tire tracks a short distance to Greer Street and observed a vehicle in the yard with damage that matched what they were investigating,” Mangrum said.
Campbell was allegedly intoxicated at the time of his arrest, but officers did not cite him for DUI.
“They could not determine if he had consumed intoxicating beverages before he struck the sign or after he arrived at the residence,” Mangrum explained. “But he admitted to hitting the stop sign.”
Within an hour officers were back at the same residence on Greer Street for a disturbing the peace call. Curtis Crow of Water Valley was arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace at 3:28 a.m.
Mangrum reported Crow was allegedly intoxicated and began shouting at the officers when they arrived at the residence.
“At that point we tried to get him to calm down and comply, but the situation escalated,” the chief added.
Other activity reported by the chief included:
Mose Shawn Walker, 47, of Water Valley was arrested for felony DUI on October 13. Mangrum reported Walker was arrested after allegedly attempting to avoid a driver’s license checkpoint at the intersection of Blackmur Drive and East Wood Street.
“Officers detected the odor of marijuana and observed an intoxicating beverage in the vehicle, and started a DUI investigation,” Mangrum told the Herald.
Walker was out on bond for an earlier felony DUI charge at the time of his latest arrest.
• Preston Phillips of Water Valley was arrested for possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop for an expired tag on October 14. Officers searched Phillips vehicle after detecting the odor of the marijuana and found a substance inside the vehicle believed to be marijuana and ecstasy.
• Eddie Booker of Lafayette County was arrested for possession of a stolen firearm and felon in possession of a weapon. Booker was an occupant in a vehicle that stopped at a driver’s license checkpoint on North Main near the Camp Ground community. Mangrum reported officers detected the odor of marijuana and the subsequent investigation led to a search of the vehicle. The gun was discovered in Booker’s possession during the search.
• Officers are actively serving bench warrants issued in municipal court for failure to appear or failure to pay old fines. Mangrum said eight misdemeanor warrants have been served and more will follow.
“The officers are working hard to ensure there isn’t a backlog of old warrants,” Mangrum explained.
The Chief also stressed that anyone who has an outstanding warrant should make arrangements to take care of it.
“If you come to us it is a lot easier than if we have to come find you,” he said. “If you think you may have a warrant, the easiest solution is to call us or come to municipal court any Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.,” Mangrum said.
