Welcome back to part two of “Christmas Around the World” at Water Valley High School. This week, the students, teachers, and staff ended the last five days of “Christmas Around the World” with exciting activities and themes. Keep reading to see just how it went!
On the fifth day of Christmas Around the World the Blue Devils took a tropical trip to Australia. Hula skirts, straw hats, and many tropical outfits and accessories were everywhere, but the students didn’t stop there. There was so much more. The student council members even contributed to the tropical decor by handing out Lei (a Polynesian garland of flowers, typically worn around the neck). Let’s just say their Christmas on the beach was one to remember.
After a long sunny day on the beach, the adventure continued on the sixth day of Christmas Around the World with a trip to the Netherlands to take on a big hunt. Q.R. codes were hidden around the school, just waiting to be scanned with the simple flick of a camera. After scanning each code, a riddle was provided to lead you to the next clue/Q.R. Code. Once all the codes were cracked, it would lead to the final product—a candy-filled gift awaiting the winners.
On the seventh day of Christmas Around the World, the student enjoyed a small act of kindness. Similar to Costa Rica tradition, Water Valley High held a school-wide Secret Santa gift exchange on Christmas Day. It was a unique way to start their Christmas gifts. Seeing the students’ faces as gifts were exchanged by all was priceless.
On the eighth day of Christmas Around the World the students engaged in a battle. Each first-period class had received a gingerbread house from the student council to decorate weeks earlier. Students spent weeks decorating them and first through third place winners were selected based on creativity, decor and overall best. It was fun watching all the students and teachers step into their artistic side to decorate their gingerbread houses.
The Blue Devils made their very last stop in Germany on the ninth day of Christmas Around the World. Germany has a sweet tooth, and because of this, their Christmas celebration involves polishing up their finest of boots and leaving them outside the door before hitting the hay to come back the following day with treat-filled shoes – thanks to St. Nicholas.
That’s exactly what students did. During the first period, students left shoes outside the classrooms to return later and find themselves a sweet treat from the council members or, should I say, St. Nicholas. After all of this candylicious fun, the Devils concluded their “Christmas Around the World.” Thank you to the student council for making these creative themes, and an even bigger thanks to all who participated.
The Christmas activities continued with the Blue Devil powerlifting team as they hosted their annual “North Swole” Meet this past weekend. The Lady Devils competed Friday afternoon and concluded with four medalists, and as a team, they finished fourth out of nine total teams and 167 lifters in all. The guys’ meet was held the next day, and they placed third overall with six medalists. This is considered one of the best meets of the year because this meet was not solely about lifting weights; instead, it was a Christmas charity event used to give back to the community. Each lifter that participated in the meet was required to provide one toy in order to lift, whereas a cash entry fee is usually required. Every toy that was brought was given to young students at the D.E.S. (Davidson Elementary School) and presented to them by the Powerlifting teams. Last year, the team raised 150 toys to be passed out to children, but this time around, the number was doubled! The team and community managed to raise 340 toys to be gifted back to the younger students. Community, we thank you for all of your support, and continue to come out and watch these lifters advance throughout the year!
The students at Water Valley High have been high in Christmas Spirit. After weeks of hard work, patience, and lots of time spent in the books, we are excited about Christmas break (slowly) approaching. And with school coming to a pause, so will the action reported in “Inside the Blue and White.”
Expect to hear back from soon and we will see just how spectacular the Christmas break was.
HO HO HO, and Blue Devil, Merry Christmas to all; see ya’ next time!
