WATER VALLEY – Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum issued a routine reminder for the holidays – lock your vehicle and remove valuables from inside it. His advice comes after officers took a report of an automobile burglary on Dec. 14 when a gun was reported stolen. The incident occurred near North Main Street.
“We believe this was an isolated incident,” the chief noted. “But generally speaking, this kind of activity picks up everywhere during the holidays. There are always a few grinches out there looking for money and guns. Please take precautions and don’t be a grinch’s helper.”
Other activity reported by the chief included:
• William Hentz, II, of Bruce was arrested by officers with the Oxford Police Department on a bench warrant from Water Valley Municipal Court. Mangrum reported the warrant was issued after Hentz failed to appear for a traffic violation.
“We appreciate the assistance from Oxford PD,” Mangrum said. “We work regularly with the Oxford Police Department and the Lafayette County sheriff’s department. We send information back and forth among the departments almost daily.”
• Vernay Hervey was arrested for DUI, second offense, on Dec. 14 during a traffic stop for speeding on Frostland Drive. Officers launched a DUI investigation after detecting the odor of an intoxicating beverage and determined she was under the influence. Hervey has a prior DUI conviction in Desoto County.
Mangrum reported she was cited for speeding, no liability insurance, driving under suspension (implied consent), and no seatbelt. She was booked in the Yalobusha County Detention Center. The chief said the citation for DUI, second offense, carries a mandatory five days in jail.
• Kenyarra Baker, 23, of Water Valley was arrested for disorderly conduct on Dec. 12. Mangrum reported that officers responded to a residence after receiving a call about a disturbance and unwanted subject.
“Officers tried to diffuse the situation and let Baker leave on her own accord, but she refused to comply with their commands,” Mangrum said.
Baker was arrested after cussing the officer and disobeying a lawful order. She was booked in the Yalobusha County Detention Center.
