Anddd we’re back and better than ever! The students were rowdy and rumbling through the halls like they never left after a two-week-long break. But it was a refreshing week for teachers, students, and faculty. Continue reading to see just how Water Valley High is bringing in the new year!
Before we start on the new year’s shenanigans, let’s go over a few things that occurred during Christmas break. The boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams dominated during their return to the second half of the season. The boys took on Strayhorn and won with a victorious score, 57-52. They were rewarded with a trip to Rust College to watch and observe their players’ execution of drills, game-making plays, and good sportsmanship but unfortunately could not attend due to inclement weather.
The girls also competed against the Strayhorn Mustangs and ended the game with a conquering score of 45-7. After their big win, the girls traveled locally to the boomtown, Oxford, for a little team bonding while watching the LSU Tigers battle the Ole Miss Rebels. Overall, it was a fun experience for both teams. It will be exciting to watch the energy come alive on the court during the remainder of the Blue Devils’ season!
Congratulations on the wins, and keep up the hard work! Show your support this Friday as the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams travel to North Panola (if the weather allows) to take on the Cougars;. Jump-off is at 6:30 p.m.
The basketball teams aren’t the only ones putting in the effort. The powerlifting team is on its way to regionals! Each week, even during the break, all lifters were given the opportunity to attend an intense workout schedule with the hopes of bettering their chances at the regional meet. Every lifter is making sure to give it their all, as many are in competition with others in the weight room to be considered as “The Final 12.”
The final 12 lifters are the best from each weight class, of which there are 12, so ideally, one per class would be chosen. With this selection, each member of the 12 will be entered into the regional meet with hopes of advancing all the way to the state competition! While it is not easy, it is always possible. Powerlifting is not only a physical strength sport, but it is also a mental one.
Everyone in the community can help cheer on each lifter as the regionals will be held in the Davidson Elementary School gymnasium. The girls compete on Friday, January 26 and the boys on Saturday, January 27.
Aside from these sports, the official cheer and track tryouts dates are slowly approaching. The cheer clinic is scheduled February 5-7 from 3:30-4:45. Expect to see pom poms flying through the air, chants louder than ever, and jumps that could touch the stars during the cheer clinic as the girls practice the material for the tryouts. Next is the actual tryout date, scheduled on February 8 at 4 p.m. in the DES gym.
Track sign ups have been posted and the sign-up forms have been submitted. The track teams have made a small change this year with separate meets for junior high and varsity teams. The date for track tryouts will be released soon and it will be held at the high school. If you are interested in joining either team, be sure to show up and be ready to work!
By the end of last week, it was a frosty Friday inside the Blue and White, but that didn’t stop the students from ending their week with a bang! Students were overjoyed to know a four-day week was ahead, and that didn’t take into account more days off for the icy weather.
But there’s nothing like being back “Inside the Blue and White”! Check back next week to see how the snowy weather impacted our week!
