The deadline to qualify to run in the special election for mayor in Water Valley is Wednesday, January 24, at 5 p.m. and the candidate list is growing. WATER VALLEY – Two candidates have qualified for the special election for mayor at presstime with only a day remaining before the deadline. Ron Hart was the first candidate, turning in his petition on January 8. Tommy Reynolds turned in petition on January 17. A third candidate, Terry Rockette, also submitted paperwork Monday that is being validated as part of the qualifying process.
The special election will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and the deadline to qualify is Wednesday, Jan. 24. To qualify, a candidate must submit a petition to the city clerk signed by not less than 50 qualified electors who reside in the City of Water Valley. There is no qualifying fee and candidates do not run on a party affiliation in the special election. All candidates will run as independents.
The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of the term that ends June 30, 2025. The salary for mayor is $20,004 annually. The mayor’s seat was formerly held by Donald Gray, who resigned at the end of the year to take office as Yalobusha County Chancery Clerk.
Alderman-at-large Herbie Rogers was appointed Mayor Pro Tem at the beginning of the term in 2021 and assumed duties as mayor when the position was vacated at the end of 2023.
