The halls are busy, bustling, and filled with the roar of students! It has been a thrilling week “Inside the Blue and White.” After a few enduring weeks, students and staff are back on track and ready to tackle the remainder of the school year. Though the students at Water Valley High have been overwhelmed with many activities, they have still managed to make school and education their top priority!
The Water Valley Chamber of Commerce rewarded top performing students with a delicious breakfast to start the day. Seventh through 12th grade students who were on the Teacher’s Honor Roll for term two of the school year enjoyed breakfast sandwiches and orange juice. We extend our thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for providing a scrumptious meal, an encouraging reward for our good grades. We will strive for more good grades this year.
When students aren’t hitting the books, they are out enjoying school activities including watching the varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball teams dominate the Strayhorn Mustangs! Last Friday, the basketball team recognized all eighth graders as they entered their high school season. The team’s seniors were also celebrated for senior night. The senior players include #10 Kee Neely, #14 Kalaila Folson, #24 Kendra Bishop on the girls’ team. Senior players on the boys team are #4 De’Terry Hawkins, and #22 Jalin Joiner. The gym was packed with students, fans, players, coaches, and basketball fanatics and the environment was like no other!
The crowd was loud, players were chanting, coaches were intensely coaching, and each team managed to execute a game-winning play to end the night with a victory! The girls played first in a close game that kept fans and teammates on the edge of their seats. They ended the first quarter slightly behind the Mustangs. By the time the buzzer went off for the fourth quarter, they had fought hard to earn their winning score of 36-32.
The boy’s team held a major lead through each quarter! They started the game out strong from the second the clock started til the end of the game with a conquering score of 83-37. It was a successful senior night and we enjoyed the recognition of the eight graders.
Congratulations to these seniors as their basketball season is slowly coming to an end and all eighth graders who are just beginning their basketball era at the high school!
Talk about musical talent! Nine members of the Water Valley marching band were selected to perform in the two-day I-55 honor band clinic on Friday and Saturday morning this past weekend. This clinic honors members of the band from 7th-12th grade.
In order to be considered for this clinic, you must submit your sign-up application through the band director, and the judges of the I-55 honor clinic must select you. If selected, you travel to Northwest Community College on I-55 interstate (hence the name). Each band member individually auditions at this clinic for the opportunity to earn a position on one of the three concert bands. Placement in one of these concert bands depends on your skill level.
After you are placed in the band, you practice the music the band director provides. After a few days of practice and music development, each band performs the music they were given. Finally, each band executes their song to show off their latest band skills.
Congratulations to all Water Valley High marching band members who were nominated!
Spirits are high and grades are higher! Once again, the students at Water Valley High had a successful week filled with excitement. Spending time with classmates, teachers, and staff has been wonderful. Don’t miss next week’s report for the latest updates about your favorite Blue Devils!
