We have us a mayor’s race, folks! And a “special” mayor’s race at that. Outside of French fries, I’m not sure there’s anything I love more than a special election. Well, maybe a few things but I do enjoy the ala carte nature of getting to vote directly on one single issue.
In this case, the issue will be who serves as Water Valley’s mayor for the remainder of former Mayor Gray’s term – so that’s until June 30, 2025. And then we get another mayor’s race!
We have three people running for Water Valley mayor: Tommy Reynolds, Ron Hart and Terry Rockette.
Tommy Reynolds seems to be very accessible considering he attends just about every public event that Water Valley puts on. His decades of experience as a Mississippi House Rep for District 33 is impressive and I’ve found it really easy to get to know what issues are important to him. All you have to do is scroll Facebook and a Tommy Reynolds’ video pops up. He emphasizes his eagerness to hear from all the townspeople on what is important us. And I think it’s vital to have a mayor who actively reaches out to citizens across the board for our insight.
Ron Hart has the cutest little family, a central Main Street business (Midtown Auto Parts), is the son of our former Mayor Hart and currently serves as Alderman of Ward 1.
Terry Rockette has been in the Water Valley mayoral race before and is passionate about his visions. He is also very accessible on social media in a series of videos where he speaks extensively for himself on local issues.
Everyone will have their own good reasons to vote for their preferred candidate. And we can vote for different candidates and still be friends. My own husband and I don’t always vote the same on some issues. I appreciate a variety of opinions and thoughtful critique of my own (as long as everyone eventually concludes that I am right, of course.) But none of that matters at all unless we all actually go vote. That’s the key!
So, here’s what you and I can do right now to make sure that happens – take out our phones, scroll to the alarm app, set an alarm for Tuesday, February 13th and label it “Go Vote!” Then set a back-up alarm because, if you’re like me, then you’ll just continually snooze your reminders all day. So, make the alarms so frequent and annoying that you’ll actually go vote just so you can turn off the alarms in good faith. God is watching if you turn off that alarm and don’t actually go vote.
Voting in local elections directly impacts all of us more than voting in big presidential elections. Trump and Biden don’t care if Water Valley gets a splash pad or has a reliable electrical grid or has a functioning Civic Center for our Watermelon Queen pageants.
And y’all know how it goes here in little ol’ Water Valley – our elections hinge on a few votes – sometimes only a matter of two or three! Don’t press snooze on the Mayor’s race!
