WATER VALLEY – Water Valley High School senior Lakendra Bishop inked a letter of commitment to attend Lyon College in Arkansas. Bishop was awarded a track scholarship, making her the first scholarship recipient in Coach Bernadette Sayles’ track and field program. The signing was held Monday morning in the Water Valley High School gym with Bishop surrounded by friends and family members.
Bishop has been a member of the team since eighth grade and battled back after a knee injury that sidelined her during her junior year.
“She is a tremendous athlete,” Sayles reported. “When she came back she was a little timid at first. She rehabbed it and was one of my better sprinters.”
Coach Sayles also said this was the first year her track team made it to the state in the relays.
“Lakendra was a big part of that, she was our first leg on both relays,” Sayles added.
Bishop reported it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to overcome her injury and have a great senior season. She also credited Sayles for helping her excel.
“She was hard one me, I won’t lie. But I feel like her pushing me is why I am here today,” Bishop explained.
She also reported a strong connection to Lyon College when she visited the campus.
“When I went on my visit, it was very easy to connect with everybody there. It is a quiet place and small, but it felt like home,” she said.
Sayles reported that Bishop’s success is big boost to her program.
“I have a very young track team and I am excited. I am pretty sure she is not going to be the last one to sign a track scholarship,” Sayles said.
