WATER VALLEY The Family Hairloom was presented the Business Spotlight Award by the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday, May 14. First launched by the Chamber in 2016, the award honors merchants, businesses and individuals who excel in their support of the community and are involved in local activities.
The Family Hairloom opened for business on April 14, 1969 as Coiffures by Larry under the ownership of Water Valley native Larry Davis.
Davis was 28 years old at the time and had completed an apprenticeship under the accomplished hairstylist Augie Townend in Meridian. The salon was located next to Cooper’s Jewelry Store at 610 Main Street and was well-known for its elegant decor. Davis soon became equally well-known throughout the community as “Hair Man”, an affectionate nickname given to him by family friends Bennie Cole Taylor and Dr. Mabry McMillan.
Following the tornado that struck Water Valley on Easter in 1984, Davis moved the salon to the present location at 1117 North Main Street. In addition to a new location, Davis acquired new business partners, daughter Dena Hardy and sister Linda Bass in the newly renamed The Family Hairloom.
Another addition was made to the Hairloom family, in September. 2003, when Constance Thweatt Griffin, joined the team.
