Monthly Junior Auxiliary Report
By Katherine Montague
This past month has been a busy one for the Junior Auxiliary of Water Valley. With the ending of the 2023-2024 school year this week, we wrapped up three major Junior Auxiliary service projects that take place in our Yalobusha County schools, and also enjoyed our first annual golf tournament to be held at night. While we are finishing up these few projects, we are also very busy getting ready for the second annual Family Field Day coming up on the morning of Saturday June 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m..
Before we talk about our service projects and the golf tournament, let me give you the Family Field Day Details. This year, we are holding the event down at the Crawford Sports Complex. We will have a giant inflatable ax throw, a giant inflatable soccer ball target, and stations for field game.

Jacob Crawford was one of two Water Valley High School seniors awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Junior Auxiliary of Water Valley.
Challenge your parents, kids, brothers, sister, and friends to a three-legged race, a potato sack race, tug-of-war, and more. The Family Field Day is a free event, and bottled water will be provided. We are partnering with Crawford Sports Complex, and they will open the concession stand open for attendees to purchase snacks and food, with proceeds benefiting the complex.
This special day aligns with JA’s National Focus, “Disconnect to Reconnect: Breaking the Cycle” encouraging families to take a break from digital distractions and engage in joyful, face-to-face interactions. Bring your family and friends, regardless of age, we can’t wait to see you on June 8!
The first service project that we are wrapping up is our Bundles of Love project. Our crew of volunteers of all ages met in the Davidson Elementary School cafeteria to pack grocery bags of donated nutritious snacks and meals to send home on the weekends with children experiencing food insecurity. This project meets a crucial need in our community, serving over 100 children who attend DES and Water Valley High School each week. This project will be continued in the fall when the 2024-2025 school year begins, and also during the month of June when Junior Auxiliary will be helping with snacks or meals as needed for the children attending summer school in the Water Valley School District.
The next service project that the Junior Auxiliary completed was our annual Read to Succeed Book Drive. This project was created to advance literacy for second graders attending Davidson Elementary School and Coffeeville Elementary School. The students are provided books to read during the summer months to help encourage them to develop their reading skills at home. The goal is to help them be prepared when they start third grade and boost their success in the third grade Reading Gate test.

Ethan Johnson was the second recipient of the Junior Auxiliary’s $1,000 scholarship for a Water Valley High School student.
This book drive was very successful thanks to community support. Junior Auxiliary was able to double the number of books we sent home with each student. This wonderful showing of support was celebrated at each of the elementary schools with a very special book event. The students enjoyed a presentation by local author, Yvonne B. Cox, who wrote the Pearlie I Dream book series.
On May 14, Cox spent the morning at Davidson Elementary and then headed to Coffeeville Elementary that afternoon. After the presentation, Junior Auxiliary volunteers presented the children in both schools with their summer books.
Our third project was the annual presentation of Junior Auxiliary scholarships. These scholarships are offered to high school seniors attending college next fall, and this spring the Junior Auxiliary was able to award two $1,000 scholarships to Water Valley High School seniors and one $1,000 scholarship to a senior from Coffeeville High School. We had 16 applicants, an excellent turnout, prompting JA to offer four $1,000 scholarships next year instead of three.
Our three deserving recipients were awarded these prizes to continue their studies after graduation after the Junior Auxiliary Board voted anonymously on their essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and applications. A big Junior Auxiliary congratulations to Za’ Kyrus Kimble of Coffeeville High School, and to Ethan Johnson and Jacob Crawford of Water Valley High School. We wish you well in all future endeavors.

Za’Kyrus Kimble was this year’s recipient of the Junior Auxiliary’s $1,000 scholarship for a Coffeeville High School senior.
The annual Junior Auxiliary Golf Tournament was held at night this year. This is the first time we have done a night tournament, and it was an excellent way to get the community involved as sponsors for this tournament that helps finance JA projects in the upcoming year. The golfers also had so much fun during the tournament.
Watching these teams tee off with glow-in-the-dark balls after nightfall added a memorable element of excitement, and we would love to also thank the Yalobusha Country Club for hosting and feeding everyone involved with such a delicious taco bar.
Congratulations to the winners of the Championship Flight: Stan Sparks, Lance Clement, and Austin Bain.
