A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday morning for the Hummingbird Bakery, a family operated bakery on Main Street in the Hendricks Building. Pictured holding the ribbon are owners Brenda Bradford and Stand Bradford and their daughters, Autumn and Kimber.
WATER VALLEY – Mayor Tommy Reynolds and the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed the Hummingbird Bakery with a ribbon cutting Tuesday morning. Owner Brenda Bradford cut the ribbon as the crowd gathered in front of her business.
Bradford reported the bakery opened March 23, and business has been brisk.
“I was worried that I would not get enough foot traffic with Water Valley being a small town. But everyone has been so supportive, they are here when we open the doors, we always have somebody waiting on us,” Bradford reported.
Her specialty croissants and danishes have been a big hit. She also reports a stream of regulars who come in each week for sour dough bread, bagels and cinnamon rolls.
“I think people are enjoying having a little healthier bread option,” she explained.
Bradford has over two decades experience baking and previously sold her products under the state’s cottage food laws that allows a home-based food business to operate without a commercial kitchen.
“I decided to take a chance and open a bakery. I love my food and my family loves food. Everybody has a love language and I say baking is my love language, I love to feed people,” she explained.
The family moved to Water Valley from Oxford nine years ago.
“We loved the small town vibe and we knew a few people here,” Bradford explained about the move.
She reported operating the bakery is a family affair, with her husband, Stan Bradford helping in the back, and daughters Autumn Bradford and Kimber Bradford also getting in on the action. The couple’s teenagers daughters are getting acclimated to waking up early on Saturday morning to help.
“They are getting used to it and like to make their own money,” Bradford added.
Located in the Hendricks Building on South Main Street, the bakery is open Wednesday thru Saturday, 7 a.m. until noon.
Bradford also said her work is labor intensive.
“There is a lot of prepping with baking with the dough rising. I am not open on Mondays and Tuesdays, but I always have people try to come in because they see me in here. Some nights I work until 10 or 11 p.m,” she said.
