WATER VALLEY – To celebrate National Trails Day, the Friends of Water Valley Rails to Trails organized a successful community hike and picnic on June 1. The event drew a crowd of nature enthusiasts, families, and local residents, all eager to explore and appreciate the scenic beauty of the proposed trail.
The day began with a guided nature hike led by local botanist and event co-organizer Katelynn Dillard. Participants were treated to an educational and immersive experience as Dillard shared her extensive knowledge of the region’s flora. The hike, which covered the north end of the proposed trail, allowed attendees to see first-hand the natural beauty and biodiversity that the trail aims to preserve and promote.
Following the invigorating hike, the community gathered for a festive cookout and picnic, a variety of games, live music by DJ Joe Gurner, and fellowship. Both children and adults enthusiastically participated, making the event a memorable experience for all ages.
Friends of Water Valley Rails to Trails is dedicated to converting former rail lines into public trails and aims to promote outdoor activities, environmental education, and community engagement through events like this. The group’s efforts not only foster a sense of community but also highlight the importance of preserving natural spaces for future generations.
The June 1 event also served as a platform to raise awareness and support for the ongoing trail project. Volunteers shared information about the trail’s benefits and how community members can get involved in its development.
Event co-organizer James McCormick expressed his delight at the turnout and success of the event.
“It’s wonderful to see so many people coming together to celebrate our natural environment and support the Rails to Trails initiative. The hike and picnic were a fantastic way to enjoy the beauty of Water Valley and to build community support for our trail project. Thanks to everyone who made this possible,” McCormick said.
The Water Valley Rails to Trails Group plans to host more community events in the coming months, aiming to further engage residents and promote the many benefits of the proposed trail. For more information about the group and how to get involved, follow the group’s social media pages.
