Pastor Killed In I-55 Wreck
Sammy Townes was killed in a vehicle accident Monday.
A longtime Water Valley pastor was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on I-55 Monday afternoon. Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Marvin Baird reported Sammy Townes, 63, was a passenger in a 2010 Cadillac hearse heading northbound on the interstate near the Enid exit when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times.
Yalobusha County Coroner Ronnie Stark pronounced Townes dead at the scene. Stark reported Townes was ejected from the vehicle.
The Cadillac was driven by 29-year old Jacorrius C. Bennett of Grenada, according to Baird. Bennett was not injured.
Townes was a much-loved pastor at Spring Hill North M.B. Church in Water Valley, serving the church for four decades. He also operated Townes Funeral Home in Grenada. Stark reported that Townes was traveling to Memphis to pick up a body when the accident occurred.
So sad we lost a great servant of the community and a classmate. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
I didn’t know this kind looking man, but, I feel it would have been an honor if I did! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his congregation! I feel like he would want this to be a celebration of his life and his passing through to Heaven to be with Jesus and his many friends and family who have crossed over before him! Pastor Sammy Townes was my mother favorite Nephew she loved him dearly, he will definitely be missed by his family and friends. A very great loss to our family I can only say I will see you again Cuz.
