15th Annual Walton/Dowsing Scholarship Banquet Scheduled Saturday, August 31
The Women’s Missionary Society of Miles Memorial CME Church will host the 15th annual Walton/Dowsing Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, August 31, at 2 p.m. The banquet will be held at Fountain Square located at 218 Frostland Drive in Water Valley. The speaker will be Dexter Ross, Assistant Principal and Academic Coach at Water Valley High School. The cost to attend the banquet is $25 per person, and tickets must be purchased no later than August 20.
In prior years, the Women’s Missionary Society has provided local students with approximately $18,000 in scholarship funds. The society aims to provide at least two $500 scholarships to qualifying students from the Water Valley School District. Last year, the society added the Butler McLeod Missionary Scholarship to their scholarship list. Recipients of the 2023 scholarships were Denise Wilson, Saveon Freeman and Cyrus Pritchard.
In addition to the Walton/Dowsing Scholarship and the Butler McLeod Visionary Scholarship, the society is thrilled to announce additional opportunities for local students: the Davidson High School Class of 1967, Catherine Brown and Friends, the Butler McLeod family and the Joyce Hall Judson family will fund James Brown’s Investing in Our Sons Scholarship, the Hazel Martin Hawkins Scholarship and the Butler McLeod Memorial Scholarship. Approximately $4,000 will be awarded to selected students who have applied with all required documents.
For tickets to the banquet, please contact Rubye Carr at (662) 473-3509 or Cynthia Shegog at (662) 607-1867. Please make a check or money order payable to Mile Chapel CME Church. Your generous donation will be greatly appreciation and go a long way in supporting local students.
Students receiving scholarships are asked to attend the banquet. There will not be a fee for scholarship recipients to attend the banquet and organizers are encouraging everyone to support their community’s youth by participating in the banquet.
Rev. Robert Hardaway serves as pastor of Mile Memorial CME Church. Carr serves as Missionary President.
