The Blue Devils were busy again this week! From senior photos to officer nominations and Friday night lights, we have been all over the place these past seven days.
On Monday, seniors in Coach Michael Howland’s College and Career Readiness class took a trip downtown to visit Base Camp Coding Academy. The purpose of this class is to teach seniors the importance of the decisions they make after leaving Water Valley High School and what steps to take in order to achieve their desired career goals.
Base Camp Coding is not necessarily a traditional path after graduating from high school, but I think that is a big part of the value of this opportunity for students. Mr. Sean Ennis, the director of Base Camp, gave us a tour while explaining the day-to-day lives of students and how the academy runs. He also explained some of the great benefits that studying at Base Camp offers, such as free tuition, credits through a partnership with Northwest Mississippi Community College, and strong connections to potential employers for graduates of the school.

Student Council Officers for the 2024-2025 school year (from left to right) are Mandaryn Smith, Mallory Tidwell, Lailah Harris, Jenna Trusty and Payton Darby.
The student council had a big week too! It’s that time of year where we begin to plan out our events for the school year, as well as nominate officers. Choosing representative officers is extremely important because these students will represent the school and student body as a whole for the entire year, and it’s key to have hard-working people be elected.
Our student council officers for the 2024-2025 school year are as follows: Jenna Trusty (president), Lailah Harris (vice president), Mandaryn Smith (treasurer), Payton Darby (secretary), and Mallory Tidwell (online specialist). I am so honored to be able to serve as president for this school year, as student council is something I have participated in since freshman year and find really important in our school. I can’t wait to work with these ladies and our sponsors to put on different events for the students of WVHS.
Speaking of nominations, the high school girls had the opportunity to nominate themselves for the 2024 homecoming court this week! Being voted to homecoming court is a big honor, with each lady getting the chance to represent their class in the homecoming parade and ceremony. These girls will campaign for votes leading up until voting on Friday, September 6th. I love seeing everyone’s creativity when it comes to the design of their flyers, and I wish everyone the best of luck! I can’t wait to see how the court turns out.
Seniors had another important “last” on Friday–their last picture day! As yearbook editor, I am charged with helping the photographers out with senior composites. It is absolutely crazy to see my classmates, many of which I have known since kindergarten, get dressed up in a cap and gown for these pictures. It really makes you stop and think. As a class, we have been through every stage of life together, from playing on the playground together, to experiencing a pandemic our first year of junior high, to now preparing for our next stages of life, stages that come after high school. It’s really hard to believe.
Blue Devil athletics have had quite the week as well! Volleyball players kept up the hard work this week, facing North Panola on Tuesday at home. The Lady Devils swept the Cougars in a blowout game, winning 3-0 sets.
Junior high football also played this week. The seventh grade team suffered an unfortunate loss, but the eighth grade team won big against the Charleston Tigers. The junior high cheer team cheered at these games, their first time truly cheering on the field, and I am so proud of them! The team is made up of entirely new girls, all 7th graders, but they have truly put in the work to prepare for football season.
Varsity kicked off their season with the first official game against the Independence Wildcats at home on Friday. The team was in high spirits for the first half of the game, but slipped up during the second half, allowing the Wildcats to pull ahead. The final score was 15-37. The Blue Devils will be hard at work to improve upon weak areas before their game at home against the North Pontotoc Vikings that has been moved to Thursday, September 5th.
I’m thrilled about everything we have going on in the coming weeks, and even more thrilled to share these events with the town.
