Drum major Mallory Tidwell holds up the trophy after the Water Valley High School had a successful day at the Corinth Crossroads Classic band competition.
It’s been a busy week here in the halls of WVHS! Between benchmarks, a senior night, and all the athletic events, I have a lot to write about. Throughout last week, seventh thru 11th grade students had important benchmark testing. These tests prepare students for end of year state testing as well as give the teachers an indication of what areas to focus on going forward. These tests can be a stressful part of school, but students have done great to prepare for them.
On Monday night, the Lady Devils volleyball team played Winona at home. The girls were on fire throughout the first couple of sets, and the energy was high. Unfortunately, the Tigers were not going to let them win that easily. It was a hard fought battle in the next two sets, and the game ended up being tied, going into a fifth and final set.
Although the Lady Devils worked hard, they unfortunately fell in the fifth set. The final score was two sets to three sets.
Tuesday was game day again for junior high and junior varsity football teams. The eighth grade team continued their winning streak, beating Independence 24-16. Junior varsity also came home with the win, 14-0. The seventh graders battled hard and lost an extremely close game, 0-6. They have their last home game of the season this week against Bruce.
The cheer squad skipped out on our Wednesday practice because our coaches attended an annual coaches conference. The conference is an opportunity for them to hear from different speakers and learn different tips and tricks about how to help a squad improve!
Thursday night was exciting for the volleyball team. It was their last regular season home game as well as senior night! They played a double header against M.S. Palmer, with the senior ceremony in between games. DeNeshia “Bree” Spearman was the only senior member of the volleyball team this year. She has played volleyball since seventh grade and has played all around and libero. She has worn jersey numbers four, six, 17, and one. Her favorite Lady Devil volleyball memory is being able to play a sport that she has loved the most with girls she has grown to have a big bond with, as well the hot bus rides with her snacks and naps. The team won both games in a clean sweep, three sets to none.
The varsity football team traveled to North Carrollton to face J.Z. George on Friday night. Hurricane Helene brought in some nasty weather, so it was nonstop rain during the matchup. The band did not attend the game due to having an early competition the next day, and the cheerleaders also did not attend on account of the weather.
The Blue Devils defeated the Jaguars 42-6 for their second win of the season. They will play the Saltillo Tigers Friday, which is also homecoming! This is another big week for the Devils as we dress up and celebrate homecoming. The ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. before the football game.
We will also have the homecoming parade and pep rally downtown on Thursday night! Student council spent their weekend decorating the school with all things fairytale. Ms. Carwile provided us with paint and decorations on Saturday and Sunday, and we worked to decorate the junior high and high school for the upcoming week. We also have been working on decorations for the field for the actual homecoming ceremony.
The band had a big weekend too, with their first competition of the season on Saturday. They attended the Corinth Crossroads Classic at Corinth High School. They performed at 1:30 in the afternoon, and had a fun afternoon at the Tupelo mall while waiting on awards. Awards took place at 7:45 p.m. and the band earned great results.
Percussion, color guard, and drum major all walked away with one’s –the best rating you can get in band. Overall, the band received a two, improving from their three’s last year. The band has another competition this weekend at Northeast Mississippi Community College. This past week has been jam-packed, but I think this week is going to be even more fun! I can’t wait to write all about it!
