WATER VALLEY – The calendar and seasons may be changing, but the Water Valley eighth grade football team remains consistent as they defeated the Bruce Trojans, 12 to 0, on October 1 to improve their record to 6 – 0.
The Blue Devils took the opening drive and quickly flipped the field as quarterback Easton Newman connected with Jonathan Malone on a 47-yard deep pass. Unfortunately for the Devils, the Trojans defense stood firm and held Water Valley out of the endzone before turning it over on downs.
The Blue Devil defense rose to the occasion as Newman intercepted the Trojan passer and returned it all the way down to the Trojan nine-yard line. A few plays later Newman called his own number and scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion failed.
Water Valley held the Trojans scoreless for the remainder of the half. Defensively, Landyn Logan, Cooper Burrowes, and De’Marea Johnson paced the Blue Devils with four tackles each on the evening. The Blue Devils played a lot of backups and seventh graders for the bulk of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Newman found the endzone again on a three-yard rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion pass attempt again failed. The eighth grade team will look to complete the assignment of an undefeated season in remaining two weeks.
The first half of the junior varsity game was very promising as the Blue Devils drew first blood with a 68-yard rushing strike from Drake Mabary. The Two-point conversion failed. The defense, building off of last week’s shutout victory, kept the Trojans off the board for the first half. Defensively, the Junior Devils were paced by Zy’Kari Shaw with five tackles and a sack. Nick Rubio added four tackles of his own. The Blue Devils appeared to be headed toward a two score lead before the Trojans denied their rushing attempt at the one-yard line to end the half.
The second half the Trojans scored 16 unanswered points to secure the opposing victor. The junior varsity fell to 2-4 on the season. The Junior Devils will have a Bye Week next week before completing the 2024 Season at Bruce on Tuesday, October 15. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. for the junior high game.
