Another week is in the books at WVHS and as we get closer and closer to the end of the semester, I think the weeks are starting to get longer. It was a big one for the cheer team as we competed in Jackson on Sunday! The cheerleaders have been working hard since September to put a competition routine together. Ole Miss cheerleader and Oxford Cheer staff member, Eli Sanders, helped us big time in preparing for this competition and our last week of practice was rough. With many girls out sick and injured, we had a tough time practicing the routine full out.
We competed in a “pep rally” division, focusing on skills that would get a crowd hype in a pep rally setting. It was certainly a different environment than the state cheerleading competition! Laine Burns a.k.a. “Big Blue” also got to compete with us as the mascot. While it wasn’t a perfect routine by any means, we had so much fun performing! I had people coming up to me afterwards talking about how entertaining the routine was, and how they really enjoyed watching our mascot! The performance was certainly a hit.
I really want to stress how much the cheer team appreciates Laine and the hard work he has put in this season. We have never had someone so interested and dedicated to being the mascot. Laine always brought the energy and a positive attitude to every practice and game and we want to thank him big time for this season! When it came time for awards, we were all a little uncertain what the results would be. Everyone seemed to really enjoy our performance, but we really did know.
The competition company, Deep South Spirit, mainly hosts all star teams, so we didn’t really know how the judges would feel about our routine. However, the cheer team ended up on top, winning both the High School Pep Rally Division, and the title of Grand Champion of the Pep Rally Division.
Big Blue also earned a special shout-out, and received his very own Judge’s Choice banner for being a star performer! Coming home with banners, medals, and bling was certainly a good day to be a Blue Devil.
Each month, one teacher and one staff member are recognized at WVHS. This month Coach Cole Camp is being recognized for being a Super Star teacher due to his hard work, dedication, and professionalism.
Mrs. Betty White was chosen as the staff member of the month for all her hard work in keeping the school nice! We appreciate all the work our teachers and other staff members are constantly putting in, even if it is behind the scenes.
Mrs. Ashley Watts and the first and second year Early Childhood Development students took a trip to Northwest Mississippi Community College on Thursday, November 14. They went to the Senatobia campus to visit the Early Childhood program that the college has to offer. The students toured the area and listened to a presentation on the classes required for the program in the in-depth overview of the Early Childhood program. Second year junior student Mariah Wilson told me that something that really stood out the most to her about the Northwest path was the fact that this particular program mainly accepts students who have parents employed at the college, due to previous students not seeing the classes through and having a long wait-list for the program.
Basketball season is in full swing! The boys team played Independence on Tuesday, losing 50-54. They also played on Thursday at Lake Cormorant. The Junior High boys played Oxford at home on Wednesday night. The varsity girls also played Lake Cormorant on Thursday, with a final score of 26-43. There are plenty more games to come, stay updated on social media on when and where to support Blue Devil basketball!
Our events will start to slow down as we reach the peak of holiday season, but there will still be plenty to write about!
