Statement That Only One Political Belief Is Patriotic ‘Craps All Over 250 Years Of Americanism’

Dear Editor,
In the Nov. 14 edition of the Herald, Rankin Sherling appeared to think that he “..is the most hated by the faculty at Ole Miss”, but “the students love us.” Since he is an admitted academic, he must have the data to back this up.

If he doesn’t I can understand his trepidations. College professors tend to be grandiose. Especially those with made up courses like Medieval French Knitting, Declaration of Independence Center (does Shad White know about this?) or The Physics of Pickle Ball.

Probably the very people he thinks hate him, think that he hates them, which, among highly educated adults isn’t uncommon.
His feeling of love from all the students I can’t presume to comment upon.

Since I read that he turned to the VFW for sympathy I have to caution him against claiming universal veteran support.

I’m thinking of my uncle, who was dropped into the middle of the Battle of the Bulge, or my father-in-law, who bombed the heck out of Germany and then had to land, walk through his damage. The Liberal credentials of these men were as impeccable as their war records. I may not agree with them all the time, but who would question their perspective and for me to suggest that only one political belief is patriotic craps all over 250 years of Americanism and narrows the acceptable parameters of patriotism just when we need it most.

But I am sure at least one college professor would agree.
