WATER VALLEY – A food drive coordinated by the sixth grade student council at Davidson Elementary School (DES) culminated with the donation of hundreds of canned goods to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity’ blessing box just in time to make sure it is overflowing for Thanksgiving.
DES teacher Chestin Leard reported the student council members contemplated different projects at the start of the school year before deciding to do a food drive. Council members printed flyers that were distributed to students. The collection effort started after Halloween and Leard reported the food flowed for weeks.
“Students from Pre-K to sixth grade have brought food, our teachers, everybody has contributed and we are very thankful,” Leard added.
Leard decided the blessing box, a small box in front of the Nativity on Main Street that is stocked year-round for free distribution for community member, would be an ideal location for her students’ efforts.
Church member Eddie Wood reported the timing was perfect as there has been a strong need.
“I told the students that if they go by and open the doors, there is a good chance the blessing box could be empty. That is because there is a strong need for what we put in the blessing box,” Wood said. “Now, because of what they had done, the blessing box will be empty fewer days.”
