A rough Photoshop sketch of the proposed facade of the Railroad Avenue building that formerly housed Magnolia Furniture was reviewed during the Water Valley Historic Preservation Commission meeting on Jan. 27. Meagan Backes told commissioners that the rough sketch was a starting point to generate input from them before moving forward with a full design generated by an architect.
WATER VALLEY – Police officers responded to an unusual call on Main Street when a grenade was discovered in a mini storage unit on Jan. 29. Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported that the caller had purchased the contents of the mini storage at auction and found the grenade while he was cleaning it out. The responding officer determined that it was an inert training grenade.
“This officer’s military experience proved very valuable,” Mangrum said. “Typically we would have to call a bomb squad from Tupelo or another department to respond.”
The chief also commended the caller for being proactive.
“He immediately backed out and called us when he found the grenade. That was the right response,” Mangrum added.
Other activity reported by the chief:
• Derrick Potts, 49 of Water Valley, was arrested for shoplifting on January 30. Mangrum reported Potts allegedly stole a six-pack of beer.
“The cashier observed him and called the police. Officers were able to locate the subject with the stolen merchandise,” Mangrum said.
Potts was booked in the Yalobusha Detention Center.
• Rickaylah Pulley of Water Valley was charged with possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and littering on Jan. 22. The chief reported the charges stemmed from a traffic stop on Hwy. 7. The officer observed an object thrown from the window during the stop. The officer also detected the odor of marijuana inside the vehicle and spotted marijuana on the floorboard. The occupant admitted to discarding the marijuana from the vehicle.
“The officer was very observant to see the package thrown out the window during a night-time traffic stop,” Mangrum noted.
• Officers worked an auto burglary on Askew Street on Jan. 24. Mangrum reported $200 was reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle. He also said the case remains under investigation.
“Please do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially overnight in a parked vehicle,” Mangrum reported.
