It’s been a busy, busy week at Water Valley High School! From job shadowing to sports to projects, students have been up to a lot. Seniors started off the week with their job shadowing assignments. We were spread out in a variety of different career fields in and around town. Belle Belcher went to the Yalobusha General Hospital to shadow a registered nurse.
She reports that during her time shadowing, she helped deliver medicine to patients, check on patients, help to provide patients with meals, changed bedding, and practiced taking vitals on other nurses. I asked her why she chose to shadow a nurse.

Nine Water Valley High School band members participated in the I-55 Honor Band at Northwest Mississippi Community College. They are (front row, from left) Jordin Wier, Carolyn Floyd, Henry West and Skylar Jordan; and (back row) Lee Ingram, Jackson Herrera, Ethan Walton, Ben Surrette, and Melondi Surrette.
“I’ve always wanted to go into the medical field, and that this experience was very positive and exactly what she has wanted to do,” Belle responded.
Kenzie Norlander shadowed Lee McMinn at McMinn Realty and Land Company in town.
“We sat down and talked about all the good and bad, how to be the best of the best in the business, and overall how to be a real estate agent and what it takes.” Kenzie told me. “He showed me the MLS and how to use it, which is what real estate agents use to share information about properties for sale and listings for prospective buyers.”
Kenzie also mentioned that she chose to shadow this career because it is something that she has always wanted to pursue.
“Ever since I was a kid, we have moved and traveled all over and my parents have invested their money into homes and Airbnb. It has shown me a lot about the real estate industry and always fascinated me.”
Basketball had a big week, hosting the region 2-2A tournament at home February 4-7. The varsity Lady Devils started off the tournament with an exciting win in a close matchup against MS Palmer, 47-46. Unfortunately, they suffered losses against Ingomar and Calhoun City on Thursday and Friday night. The varsity boys had a similar record for this tournament. The Blue Devils beat Bruce 65-42, but lost to Ingomar and Calhoun City.
Both teams are set to take on the playoffs later in the week.
Cheer clinic and tryouts took place at the elementary school this week. Tryouts are always led by the upcoming seniors, and this year that was Alexia Horton and Chyanne Winters. They taught all the girls who were interested in cheer a dance, a cheer, and a sideline to perform for the judges.
Admittedly, it was a little strange to not be trying out. Cheer has been a big part of my life since fifth grade, but I know Alexia and Chyanne will do a great job leading the team this season. Other team members include juniors Payton Darby, Addy Douglas, Kenley Pullen, and Madison Bailey; and sophomores Natalie Hernandez, Bentlee Tucker, Ellissa Murphree, Channa Freeman, Faith Walton, and Janiayah Gooch.
The junior high team consists of eighth graders Paisley Blakely, Brailee King, Anna Richardson, Lafaysha Martin, and Raileigh Armstrong; and seventh graders Charlee Golson, Hadley Sherwood, Aubree Tucker, and Arianna Hattaway. Big congratulations to all these sweet girls!
Senior football and basketball player Donalvin Wilson also had quite the week, officially signing to play football at Northwest Community College. Donalvin had numerous offers to choose from, but decided Northwest was the place for him to better himself academically and athletically.
The Lady Devils softball team hosted Meet the Devils along with a practice matchup against the alumni on Saturday. Players were recognized before taking on a friendly game against WVHS past players. It was an exciting game, and we can’t wait to see the Lady Devils kickoff their season in their first official game.
The halls of WVHS welcomed the class of 2031 for sixth grade orientation on Friday morning! It kicked off with a pep rally performance from the band and cheer team, before a short presentation in the cafeteria. After that, selected seniors took groups on tours around the school and answered any questions the group may have had. This has been a tradition for as long as I can remember, and is certainly helpful in getting upcoming seventh graders acclimated to a new learning environment.
Over the weekend, nine members of the WVHS band participated in the I-55 Honor Band at Northwest Mississippi Community College. After several hours of rehearsals they were able to put on a great performance for the family and friends in attendance.
