WATER VALLEY – The annual Water Valley High School Football Banquet was held on Feb. 4 at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and top players were recognized.
The guest speaker for the night was former Blue Devil coach Brad Embry.
Citing 34 years on the football field, both as a player and coach, Embry shared the secret to success.
“The will to prepare to win is more important than the will to win,” he told the players as he stressed hard work and discipline are important for success on the field, in the classroom and in life.
The recognition included players named to the Region 2-2A First Team, Region 2-2A Super 22 Team, All State Team – all selected by coaches in the region.
The final awards selected by Blue Devil coaches were the E.J. Mays Determination Award, Larry Harris Leadership Award, Jason Langdon Will To Win and Brandon Burlsworth Character Award.
Dez Campbell received the Larry Harris Leadership Award.
“This guy was always on time, he was one of the first guys in the weight room or the first guy lined up for a drill,” Head Coach Clint Faust said during the presentation.
Ezaryon Riley received the E.J. Mays Determination Award and Brandon Burlsworth Character Award.
“He is undersized, but he didn’t play like it. He is always getting after folks and playing until the whistle,” Faust said about Riley.
Parker Turnage received the Jason Langdon Will To Win Award.
“This guys is by far the best practice player we had all year long, and in doing that he made us better as a team,” Faust reported about Turnage. “Whether he was showing us a look on offense and making the defense better, or giving us a look on defense and making us better offensively – he getting us ready for whoever we were preparing for.”
