It was another busy week in the Valley as students have been gearing up for spring break, but we had a lot to get done first. Softball had another jam-packed (and successful) week, playing four games. They first took on Hickory Flat on the road on Monday evening. The Lady Devils had a big victory over the Rebels, winning 18-6.
On Thursday afternoon, the team hosted M.S. Palmer in a game at home. The team once again found themselves victorious, as they beat the Dragons 21-2. Then, in an exciting double header against J.Z. George on Friday evening, the team left with two more wins.
The Lady Devils beat the Jaguars 19-1 in the first game and then 15-14 in the second game. Now on a winning streak, the team is ready to take on the games to come for the rest of the season!
Baseball also had a successful week, having two great games this week. The team hosted Strayhorn High School on Monday night. The Blue Devils came out on top, beating the Mustangs 8-5. Then on Saturday, the team hosted Cleveland Central. They once again found themselves victorious, winning a close game 10-9. Both softball and baseball play again at the end of spring break.
On Tuesday morning, the Ole Miss recruiter for the class of 2025 stopped by with a gift for admitted students. These students are Jackson Herrera, Mallory Tidwell, Jenna Trusty, Ethan Walton, Elise Burnes, Liam Ennis, and Reid Burress. Tuesday afternoon was also a bit hectic, with the threat of inclement weather looming over everyone. Admin decided it was safest to have an early dismissal, as to ensure that students safely made it home, because the worst of the weather was due to hit right at the end of the regular school day.
The archery team had a good Thursday night, coming out victorious in their match against the Oxford Chargers. Top female archer was senior Mallory Tidwell, with a score of 277. Top male archer was junior Matthew Surrette with a score of 273.
“The team has surpassed the ‘3200 mark’ which is a good sign of things to come later in the season,” archery sponsor Jackie Egdorf reported.
Seniors had a big morning on Friday. We got to set up and present our job shadowing boards to the junior high. This was our own little version of a career fair. Younger students had the opportunity to walk around and ask seniors different questions about the career they researched and shadowed. It was a good chance for seventh and eighth grade to be exposed to a variety of different career clusters and job paths.
Track and Field had a meet on Friday morning in Oxford, and it let to a lot of success for the Blue Devils. Eighth grader Akera White broke a longstanding, 17year long record in the 100m dash, with a time of 12.75 seconds. This record was previously set at 13.38 seconds by Ashley Phillips in 2008. Way to go Akera!
Students will enjoy this next week off from school, taking vacations or relaxing close to home. We are in the final stretch of the school year, and it is hard to believe it’s almost over!
