WATER VALLEY – A Water Valley man was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of simple assault following separate incidents on Stephens Street.
Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported that Kenneth Mayes, 41, flagged down a motorist on Stephens Street on April 4. When the driver stopped, Mayes allegedly punched him through the driver’s side window, causing facial injuries.
While officers were investigating the incident, they received another report on April 16 after Mayes allegedly pointed a gun at someone on Stephens Street and threatened to shoot them if he caught them walking along the street again.
“He accused this person of being wearing a wire to snitch on people,” Mangrum said. “I am not aware of any factual basis to his claim.”
The chief said an arrest warrant was issued and Mayes was apprehended on April 22. He has since posted bond and was released.
Other activity reported by the chief:
• A runaway 14-year-old juvenile was located safe in New Albany after officers took a report on Friday, April 18. Mangrum said officers received the report shortly after noon and worked throughout the afternoon and night to track down an address.
“They did a great job of locating her,” Mangrum added.
The chief also said an active investigation remains open and charges could be filed after she was located with an adult. He also credited the New Albany Police Department and Union County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance and helping get her back home.
Mangrum said that officers investigated a similar incident involving the same juvenile earlier this year. She was tracked down safely in Tennessee and returned home.
“It was harder to track her this time, this was good police work,” the chief added.
• Robert William Corey Reid was arrested on April 17 after officers spotted him in the city hall parking lot around 7:18 p.m. Mangrum reported Reid had an outstanding arrest warrant for not coming to court.
• Officers took a report of missing flowers at Oak Ridge Cemetery on Stephens Street on April 16. Mangrum said there are no suspects in this case and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the police department.
• Officers investigated a multi-vehicle accident at Crawford Sports Complex on April 15. Mangrum reported a driver hit at least two parked vehicles in the parking lot.
“We had officers at the park who witnessed the event. During an investigation, we determined that the driver experienced a medical emergency. There was no impairment and no charges were filed,” the chief explained.
He also said there was extensive damage to the vehicles.
• Kerrgan Chrestman was arrested on April 14 at Davidson Elementary School for an outstanding bench warrant for not coming to court. He has since posted bond.
• Officers have investigated two automobile burglaries in April, one on Greer Street and the other on Boyd Street. The chief reported guns were reported stolen in both incidents.
“Again, I would like to remind Water Valley residents to remove valuables from your vehicles, especially at night,” Mangrum explained.
• Vernon Rogers, age 47 of Water Valley, was arrested after offices responded to a disturbance at Valley Motel. Officers reviewed the surveillance video from the motel and tracked down the vehicle. When they stopped the vehicle, they determined Rogers had a warrant issued out of Monroe County.
• Ladarrius Scott, age 21 of Charleston, was arrested for DUI-other on April 12. Scott was stopped on Blackmur Drive for speeding and officers detected the odor of marijuana and launched a DUI investigation.
• Marvin Belmont, age 30 of Water Valley, was arrested for possession of a weapon by a convicted felon on April 11. Mangrum reported that officers observed Belmont leave the Mexican restaurant at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop. Belmont stopped after a short pursuit. A handgun was discovered inside Belmont’s van.
“Officers checked his history and determined he is a convicted felon,” the chief said.
Belmont remains in custody in the Yalobusha County Detention Center.
