WATER VALLEY – A routine traffic stop led to a DUI arrest and a potential firearm charge for a local man last Thursday.
Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported an officer clocked a vehicle traveling 40 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone on North Court Street near the First Assembly of God Church around 3:15 p.m. on July 18. The vehicle was stopped on Wise Street, just off Central Street.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer detected the odor of marijuana. The driver admitted he had smoked prior to driving, prompting a DUI investigation. The officer determined the driver was under the influence and placed him under arrest.
A search of the vehicle revealed a firearm. It was later determined the driver is a convicted felon. The felony firearm possession will be presented to the grand jury for a possible additional charge.
Michael Jenkins, 34, of Jones Street in Water Valley, was charged with driving under the influence and later posted bond.
Mangrum also reported that officers responded to a disturbance in the Rolling Hills area on the night of July 19 after a report of a fight. When officers arrived, the male subject had already left the scene but later returned. He told officers that Angel Green, 45, of Water Valley, had stabbed him in the neck with a beer bottle during an altercation. The victim refused ambulance transport and was later taken to seek medical treatment by his mother. Green was arrested and charged with aggravated assault due to the nature of the injury.
he following day, Green filed a separate report against the male subject, identified as Edward Sims Sr., 53, of Water Valley. Green alleged that Sims threw a beer bottle at her and punched her in the face. A warrant for simple assault is under judicial review.
