20 Years—July 13, 2006 – Lacey Harris represented Water Valley in the Miss Hospitality Pageant in Hattiesburg. She is the 21-year-old granddaughter of Charley and Betty Harris, and the daughter of Stacey Russell and Charles Harris, Jr.
Ashley Wilbourn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Frank Wilbourn, was honored by Kappa Delta Sorority at the sorority’s National Leadership Conference, held in Minneapolis, Minn. A senior at Millsaps College, Ashley is president of Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta. She received the Foundation Scholarship (the highest monetary scholarship given) and the Corre Anding Stegall Leadership Award.
Yalobusha County Constables, Charles Calder of Coffeeville and Randy Simmons of Water Valley, recently completed a training course held in Tupelo, which included using force, basic Spanish, and medical training for first responders.
30 Years—July 18, 1996 – Jimbo Thompson retired after 29 years in the education field. A Water Valley native, he had taught in Maben High School, Tunica High School, Marks High School, and Patterson High School in Louisiana, before returning home to serve for 22 years.
Valley Auto Parts held a grand re-opening at its new location in Magnolia Plaza Shopping Center. The business was founded by Harry Fair in November of 1956 and was purchased by his son-in-law, Randy Terry, in April of 1989.

40 Years—July 17, 1986 – The 7th Annual Watermelon Carnival is set for Saturday, August 2.
Marc Bryan, a Security Police Squadron member of the 314th Airlift Wing, stationed in Little Rock, Ark., is a member of a four-man team competing in what was billed as “The Greatest Airlift Competition of the Free World.” Marc’s Unit won first place. He is the son of Charlene and Larry Bell of Water Valley and the late Jimmy Bryan of Taylor.
The Jaycees were hosting the 3rd annual rodeo, sanctioned by the Rodeo Association. To enter the Rodeo contestants were to contact Jerry Bolden of Holly Springs.
Cindy Fernandez, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fernandez, has recently returned home after spending a year in Australia as a Rotary Exchange Student.
50 Years—July 15, 1976 – “Red” Cotton, first baseman for the Water Valley Colonels, a semi-pro team in Water Valley a few years ago, was among old-timers playing Saturday night. The game was between two teams, composed of former outstanding players, and it was played on the Magnolia Youth Baseball field.
Mayor Watson Hunt announced that a meeting of Main Street proprietors and businessmen would be held for a presentation on the beautification of Main Street Project.
Wayland Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hill, who is with the Corps of Engineers, was presented a citation for sustained superior performance.
60 Years, July 14, 1966 – A sewage disposal lagoon was under construction for the City of Water Valley, near O’Tuckolofa Creek, southwest of the city. Completion was expected to be before September 1.
Larry Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Evans, has been awarded a $600 Fannie Critz Richardson Memorial Scholarship to the University of Mississippi.
The Yalobusha County Board of Supervisors okayed the contract for erection of a building for the Ram Tool Company of Chicago, which will be opening a manufacturing plant here.
Water Valley TV viewers may have cable antenna service in the next 18 months. A franchise was granted to Water Valley Video, Inc. Fees provide for a $15 installation charge and a monthly service charge of $5.
70 Years—July 12, 1956 – Mary Lou Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Johnson, would represent Water Valley in the “Miss Mississippi” Pageant to be held in Biloxi. In a contest sponsored by Water Valley Jaycees and Jaycettes, Miss Johnson was selected from a field of 15 of Water Valley’s loveliest young ladies.
The Water Valley Lions Club was sponsoring a Broom Sale and the proceeds would aid in sight conservation.
Jack Troutt, assistant county agent, reports that a Pig Club has been organized for 4-H Club boys in Yalobusha County. The Club was organized so that boys with pig projects could get more information and help with their pigs.
James S. Person, Jr. was pictured manning a battle phone at his combat station aboard the battleship, USS New Jersey. Midshipman 3-c Person is a member of the ROTC Unit at the University of Mississippi, and a son of Mr. and Ms. James S. Person, Sr. of Water Valley.
80–Years—July 18, 1946 – The Health Department is urging all citizens to get their vaccinations. Since the first of the year, seven Mississippians have had smallpox. Even though smallpox has been uncommon in the U.S., travelers to other countries are bringing the virus in and many Americans have let their vaccinations lapse.
