Jerrel Ward Benson
MEDINA, OHIO: Jerrel Ward Benson, M.D., 84, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008, in Medina, Ohio.
He was born December 27, 1923, in Oakland, a son of the late Hardy B. and Bessie H. Benson of Oakland. Dr. Benson graduated valedictorian of his high school class in Oakland in 1941. He received his associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Junior College in 1943, undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi in 1945, and graduated from John Hopkins Medical School in 1948.
Dr. Benson served his residency at University Hospital of Cleveland and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. From 1942 to 1946 he served as a technician assessing hearing loss on an artillery base and a surgical technician at Fort Meade, MD. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
Then Dr. Benson served as a Captain, practicing plastic surgery, and serving as chief of the general surgery section during 1957 and 1958. Dr. Benson was also Chief of Surgery at Cleveland, VA Hospital from 1964 to 1986 and acting Chief Surgery from 1993 to 1994, retiring after 38 years of service. He was Chief of Surgery at the former Highland View Hospital in 1958 until it merged with MetroHealth Medical Center in 1980, and continued working with MetroHealth until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Benson also provided service to patients at Sunny Acres Skilled Nursing Facility.
Dr. Benson was an associate professor emeritus of surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was a member of the Cleveland Surgical Society, Pasteur Club, Aesculapian Society, Central Surgical Society and a founding member of the Association of Veterans Administration Surgeons. He enjoyed photography, gardening and genealogy.
Dr. Benson is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Josephine Delores (nee Kresspa) Benson; sons, David Scott (Rhonda) Benson of West Chester, Ohio, Dr. Mark Alan (Kate) Benson of Glendale, Arizona, and Dr. Daniel Ward (Kelly) Benson of Sylvania, Ohio; a daughter, Larry Jane Benson (Larry) Szekely of Granger Township, PA; eight grandchildren; brothers, Leon H. (Dorothy) Benson of Olive Branch, and Donald Ray (Margaret) Benson of Charleston.
Services were held January 20, at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church in Median, Ohio. Waite and Son Funeral Home was in charge of services.
John David Houston Jr.
BATESVILLE: John David “Jr.” Houston, Jr., age 65, of Batesville died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in Charleston.
The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 26, in the Batesville Intermediate School Auditorium, with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Burial was in Eureka Cemetery in Batesville. Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. of Batesville had charge of arrangements.
Born March 4, 1942, in Batesville, Mr. Houston was a son of the late John David Houston and Mattie Lee Austin. He was the greens keeper for Panola Country Club. Mr. Houston was a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Betty Jean Houston of Batesville; a son, John L. Bobo, of Batesville; three daughters, Lois Bobo and Jamie Bobo, both of Batesville, and Sonya Stanford of Memphis; six sisters, Eunice Henderson, Virgie Hamilton and Colteen Houston, all of Batesville, Shirley Pomlee and Sarah Houston, both of Water Valley, and Annie Ruth Harris of Memphis; three brothers, Johnny Houston of Batesville, Robert Earl Houston and James Houston, both of Memphis; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Guy Allen Stough
WATER VALLEY: Guy Allen Stough, age 52, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, in Yalobusha General Hospital at Water Valley.
Born January 29, 1955, Mr. Stough was a son of Mrs. Shirley Berry and the late Eugene D. Stough. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rodney Thomas and Don Berry. Mr. Stough was a member of First Baptist Church in Water Valley. He did maintenance and installation for Franklin Heating and Cooling.
The funeral service was held at three o’clock in the afternoon in First Baptist Church at Water Valley, with Dr. Randy Bain officiating. Burial was in Camp Ground Cemetery, near Water Valley. National Funeral Home of Grenada had charge of arrangements.
Survivors include: two daughters, Erica Marie Pence of Fairborn, Ohio, and Heather Marie Aragon of Morerro, Louisiana; his mother and step-father, Shirley and Jimmy Berry of Water Valley; two sisters, Pammy Wylie of Plano, Texas and Jammy Williams of Meridian; one brother, Richard Stough of Water Valley; and two grandchildren.
Mary Kay Eidson Roberts
WATER VALLEY: Mary Kay Eidson Roberts, 84, of Water Valley died Friday, January 25, 2008, in Yalobusha County Nursing Home at Water Valley.
Born August 4, 1922, Mrs. Roberts was a daughter of the late Kilby and Annie Bankston Wiltshire. She was a retired LPN and had worked at Yalobusha General Hospital and Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. She was a member of First Christian Church of Water Valley.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, January 29, in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home, with Bro. David Freeman officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery with Anthony John Hernandez, Jr., John David Hernandez, Frank Alan Hernandez, Daniel Patrick Stephen, Anthony John Hernandez, Sr., and Joseph Irvin Stephen serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by: two daughters, Linda Joyce Eidson Stephen of Calico Rock, Arkansas, and Nancy Kay Eidson Hernandez of Water Valley; two sons, Dewitt Clinton Eidson, Jr. of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Gerald Wayne Eidson of Thornton, Colorado. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Dewitt Clinton Eidson, Sr. and Frances Melvin Roberts, and a daughter, Shirley Ann Eidson.
