Annie M. Porter

WATER VALLEY: Mrs. Annie M. Porter, 90, passed away April 7, 2008, after a brief illness.

  Born April 1, 1918, Mrs. Porter was a daughter of the late Ivy Denton and Rosalind Denton. She was a lifetime resident of Mississippi. Known to most of her friends and family as Nana, she spent the latter years of her life as a friend and companion to many. Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, on August 30, 1982.

  She leaves: four daughters, Dorris Massie and Joan McMinn, both of Water Valley, Jan Mize of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Rose Prestage (Roy) of Madison, Wisconsin; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

  The funeral service will be held in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, April 9. Vistation will be at one o’clock prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with Stepheri Prestage, Oswego, Illinois; Gary Mize, Southaven; Kevin McMinn, Saltillo; Roy Prestage, Madison, Wisconsin; Jimmy Berry, Roger Thomas, and Johnny Holloway, all of Water Valley, serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are John (Benjie) Massie and Clinton Turner, Jr. of Water Valley, and Bill McGregor of Oxford.

 

Thelma Earline Patton Paris

OAKLAND: Mrs. Thelma (Short) Earline Patton Paris, 88, died March 25, 2008.

  She was born October 28, 1919.

  Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29, at ten o’clock in the moring in New Life Fellows Church, with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Interment was in the Oakland City Cemetery.

  She is survived by: her husband, James A. Paris of Oakland; one son James W. (Ping Pong) Paris and his wife, Kelly; three sisters (Twin) Velma Patton Dickson, Mary Patton Quick, and Ruth Patton Coaten; one grandson; and three granddaughters.

 

Billie Arterbury McCuan Vickery

GREENWOOD: Billie Arterbury McCuan Vickery, age 82, died on Monday, April 7, 2008, at Indywood Glen.

    Born February 24, 1926, Mrs. Vickery was a daughter of the late James and Ethel Arterbury. She was a native and lifelong resident of Holmes and Leflore Counties. Mrs. Vickery was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. She worked for the industrial board and was the Mayor’s secretary for 25-plus years. Mrs. Vickery was also a loving mother and grandmother.

    Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 9, at eleven o’clock in the morning in Odd Fellows Cemetery at Greenwood. Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood has charge of arrangements.

    Survivors include: three sons and daughters-in-law, Morris K. and Kay McCuan, Jr. of Grenada, Ricky and Pam McCuan of Water Valley, and David M. and Debbie McCuan of Greenwood; a sister, Katie Farrish of Lumberton, Texas; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husbands, Morris K. McCuan, Sr. and George W. Vickery, and sisters, Thellie Virginia Arterbury and Josie Dell Denison.
