William F. “Bill” Gardner
JACKSON, TN: William F. “Bill” Gardner passed away Friday, June 20, 2008, in the Hickman Community Hospital at Centerville, Tennessee.
  Graveside services for Mr. Gardner will be held at ten o’clock  in the morning Wednesday, June 25, in Hollywood Cemetery, Jackson, Tennessee.
  Born in Water Valley, Mr. Gardner was a son of the late Frank and Fannie Gardner. He  was also preceded in death by one sister, Jane Gardner Scruggs. He was a member of Malesus Baptist Church. He graduated from Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tennessee. His work career consisted of working for Malone and Hyde and the Jackson Sun in advertising. He started the Jackson Journal with the late Willie Stone. Mr. Gardner was in the National Guard. His real passion was antique cars, which he showed. He was president of the Antique Car Times. He also enjoyed singing in a Barber Shop Quartet.
  He is survived by his sister, Gloria Gardner of Jackson, Tennessee, and a nephew, Steve Scruggs of St. Louis, Missouri.

Mary Ruth Mixon

GRENADA – Mary Ruth Mixon, age 80, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in the Grenada Living Center.
   A daughter of the late Elton and Beulah Newman, she was born August 28, 1927. Mrs. Mixon, a homemaker, was the wife of the late Rev. Frank H. Mixon. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church in Grenada.
  The funeral service was held at ten o’clock in the morning Saturday, June 21, in the Chapel of National Funeral Home in Grenada, with Bro. Fletcher Moorman officiating. Burial followed in Turkey Creek Cemetery in Calhoun County.
  Survivors include: two sons, Gary Mixon of Coffeeville, and Barry Mixon of Goose Creek, South Carolina; two sisters, Sara King of Paris, and Kathleen Wright of Memphis; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Enon Baptist Church in Grenada.

Martha Jane Stewart

WINONA – Martha Jane Stewart, age 90, died Thursday, June 19, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood.
    A  memorial service was held for Mrs. Stewart on Friday, June 20, at First Presbyterian Church in Winona. Rev. David Dennis officiated and  Oliver Funeral Home of Winona was in charge of arrangements.
    Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late William Frank and Mary Catherine Pope Reilly, and the widow of the late George Walter Stewart.  She  was a retired clerk for the Hilltop Hotel in Grenada, and a member of  Pearl Methodist Church in Pearl.  She was also preceded in death by  three brothers and two sisters.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mary Catherine “Patty” Bartle and her  husband, Rodney, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Georgia Caffey and her husband, Thomas “Cat”, of Winona; three sons, Donald Walter Stewart and his wife, Ann, of Guntersville, Alabama, Bill Stewart and his wife, Mary Jane, of Water Valley, Artie Stewart and his wife, Joan, of Water Valley; one sister, Helen Carlson of Menominee, Michigan; nine
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer  Society or to O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church, 3190 Highway 315 East, Water  Valley, MS  38965.
