Robert L. “Bob” Chandler

WATER VALLEY: Robert L. “Bob” Chandler, age 59, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley. Born February 27, 1949 in Water Valley. He was the son of a sharecropper, Oscar Leonard “Dock” and Faye Jackson Chandler.  Bob was a man who loved to face and overcome challenges.  He served two tours of duty with the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He was an elected official for Yalobusha County serving as Chancery Clerk (1992-1999), Election Commissioner, Chairman of the Election Commission, and Commissioner of Beat 3.  He was a member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church, the VFW Post 4100 and the Billy’s Creek Water Association.  Bob was a man who concerned himself with the details of life. Among those details he served as a volunteer fireman, and a reserve Deputy for the Yalobusha County Sherriff’s Department.

Bob is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Cubell Pullen Chandler of Water Valley (they were the first couple to be married in the prayer room of the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford); a daughter, Audrea “Audie” Ashford (Robbie) of Water Valley; “our other daughter,” Kim Wallace (David) of Water Valley; a son, Robert H. “Bobby” Chandler (Michelle) of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Barbara Caulder (Charlie) of Coffeeville; a brother, David Chandler (Diane) of Coffeeville; five grandchildren, Krystan Chandler, Torrie Chandler, Makenzie Chandler, Hunter Ashford, and John Paul Ashford.

Along with his parents, Mr. Chandler was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Sue Preston and brother, Mike Chandler.

Evelyn Hayles Poteete

  BRUCE: Mrs. Evelyn Hayles Poteete, 91, of Bruce died Monday, July 28, 2008, in the Bruce Community Living Center.

  She was born October 8, 1917 in the Springdale Community. Mrs. Poteete was a homemaker and an Avon Sales Representative. She was a member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church. She was a widow of Cleveland Verdo Poteete and was also preceded in death by her parents, James Carter Hayles and Lillie Mae Jenkins Hayles, two sons, Kenneth Dale Poteete and James Michael Poteete, a daughter, Gloria Poteete Perkins, and a grandson, Jason Burfield.

  The funeral service was held at eleven o’clock in the morning, Wednesday, July 30, in the Chapel of Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce, with Rev. Robert Earl Alexander and Rev. W. R. Harrelson officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley, with Tony Poteete, Robbie Poteete, Steve Brown, Kevin Browning, Marshall Browning, Aaron Burfield, Brian Poteete, Joey Poteete and Brandon Poteete as pallbearers.

  Survivors include: three daughters, Wanda Brown of Bruce, Janie Burfield of Senatobia, and Patricia Browning of Paris; two sons, Ronald Poteete of Bruce and Gary Poteete of Coffeeville; 22 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

 

Ruby Denham Rogers

  TAYLOR: Ruby Denham Rogers, 81, died Sunday, July 27, 2008, at her home in Taylor.

  Services were held at two o’clock in the afternoon Wednesday, July 30, in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home, Oxford. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Panola County.

  A retired operator at Emerson Electric, she was a member of Taylor Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, people, fishing, singing and country music. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. J. Rogers.

  Survivors include: three daughters, Earmel Jean Cotten and Ruby Carol Williamson, both of Water Valley, and Elizabeth Mechelle Sheeks of Taylor; two sons, Ricky Lee Rogers and Russell Clayburn Rogers, both of Oxford; two sisters, Lou Chrestman of Grenada and Jane Diane Wages of Gore Springs; four brothers, Elijah Douglas Denham of Saltillo, Russell Denham of Dundee, Michigan, Ralph Denham of Water Valley, and Wilburn Gene Denham of Ypsilanti, Michigan; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildrne.

Sudie Ridgeway

COFFEEVILLE: Sudie Ridgeway, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at her home in Coffeeville.
