Thompson Ward will hold a CD release concert in honor of their debut album Porch Funk Friday night in the backyard of the Thompson home at 110 Dupuy Street.

Brad VanWinkle will open for the group from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. and Thompson Ward will take the stage at 9 p.m. There will be a $10 cover charge for adults, $5 for teens grades 7-12, and children under 12 accompanied by a parent will be admitted free. No unaccompanied children will be allowed.

Porch Funk is more than just the debut album from Steve Thompson and Bryan Ward. Porch funk is a unique genre of music, according to Thompson who described it as an inspired mix of country, rock, soul and Mississippi roots.

“We spent the first part of the summer opening for national acts like Charley Daniels, Aaron Tippin, Sammy Kershaw, and Asia,” Thompson said. “This is our first concert for the CD release.”

Porch Funk will go on sale locally this week at Tobacco World, Piggly Wiggly, Cornerstone, Sprint Mart, and the Shell Station. It will be available in Oxford next week, Thompson added. Upcoming dates for the band include the State Theater in Starkville Aug. 21, the Library in Oxford Aug. 23, and the New Daisy on Beale in Memphis Aug. 30.
